A gentle, unescorted cycle tour along the river Danube, suitable for all levels of fitness, with comfortable bikes and a flexible itinerary including the freedom to choose your arrival day. Wending its way alongside pretty villages and the picturesque vineyards of the Wachau region, the beautiful and tranquil Danube used to be an important medieval trade route and the long-standing frontier of the Roman Empire. Today, the region is known for its cultural treasures and scenic attractions and the river banks are dotted with many impressive castles and fortresses. Well sign-posted cycle tracks on both banks allow you to enjoy 7 days of gentle cycling on a flat path between the cities of Passau and Vienna, with plenty of time to explore the attractions along the way. Cycle at your own pace, and visit as many or as few villages, towns and attractions along the way as you wish. En route, enjoy optional boat/train journeys and comfortable hotels to relax in each evening before setting off on a new adventure the following day. This tour is available from May to September and you can choose the arrival day that suits you.
Arrival at Munich airport and transfer by train to Passau in southern Bavaria (approx. 3 hrs), check in at 3 star IBB Hotel Passau for your overnight stay. Try out your rental bike or perhaps wander through the pedestrian zone and visit the famous St Stephen’s Cathedral.
Start your cycling adventure with the ‘3-rivers-cruise’ in Passau, the Venice of Bavaria (approx. 45 mins), then cycle along the Danube to the famous Danube loop, the Schlögener Schlinge (39km). Enjoy the vista from the viewpoint (20 min walk). Overnight at Hotel Donauschlinge situated beside the river bank.
Create your own route with a choice of a beautiful cycle ride to Linz (53km) or simply to Aschach (27km) where the Danube ship awaits (2 hrs to Linz). Those arriving in Passau on Saturday will instead travel by train from Eferding to Linz (50 mins, train fare is included). Spend a relaxing afternoon enjoying the delicious world famous Linzer Torte in one of the many cafés, enjoy some sight-seeing (we recommend a visit to St. Mary’s Cathedral, Austria’s biggest church) or unwind in the 4 star Arcotel Nike, located in the centre of Linz.
At your own desire choose to cycle along the banks of the Danube the distance to Maria Taferl (81km) or travel by train to Dornach (65 min, trains depart hourly), and pedal the rest of the way (37km). Situated in a slightly elevated position is the 4 star Hotel Rose which will offer you comfort and relaxation for two nights.
A return cycle tour and visit to Castle Artstetten (16km return, steep hill, entrance included), once a summer retreat for the imperial Habsburg family and the last resting place of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire who was assassinated in Sarajevo 100 years ago and which sparked the First World War. Return back to the 4 star Hotel Rose and enjoy the views of the Danube from the terrace.
Cycle to the historical town of Melk (23km) and experience the stunning winegrowing Wachau region, an outstanding example of a riverside landscape. Visit the impressive 18th century Benedictine Abbey and gardens. Embark the Danube ship to Dürnstein (75 min), a small town that offers breathtaking scenery, traditional architecture, terraced vineyards and numerous cultural sites. Künringer Castle, whose ruins still overlook Dürnstein, held the English King Richard Lionheart as prisoner in 1192. Immerse yourself in the tour of the ruins and continue by bike to Krems, one of Austria’s oldest historic cities and UNESCO World Heritage site (7km). Overnight in the 4 star Hotel Arte, Krems.
Conclude the tour with a cycle to Greifenstein, a suburb of Vienna (53km). Perhaps stop in Tulln on your way, the flower and garden town. Leave your bike here and travel by train to central Vienna, overnight in the 4 star Hotel Arcotel Kaiserwasser.
Departure or additional nights in Vienna. Create your own itinerary in the majestic, imperial city of Vienna. Visit some of the many attractions or perhaps sample the local delicacies in one of the many cafés.
