Italy, Lake Garda
Nestling alongside lemon groves, beneath the cliffs of the north-western shore of Lake Garda, Limone is a picture postcard resort - an artist’s paradise. Houses covered in blossoming geraniums and bougainvillaea line the old, cobbled streets that lead up from the lakeside. The lakeside is equally colourful with two small harbours, old arches and a variety of shops - leather goods are a speciality. The Tourist Board organises free guided walks in the area and fireworks displays, cultural visits and concerts in the square most Saturdays. Limone’s bars and promenade really come to life in the evening.
The Wine Festival in Bardolino (2-6 October) brings the summer season on Lake Garda to a close. Five days celebrating the new harvest of the grapes from which the famous Bardolino wines are made. Plenty of opportunity to taste the wines and sample regional food specialties, all accompanied by musical concerts ending in a spectacular firework display over the lake.
A night at the opera in the ancient arena in Verona must surely be one of life’s great experiences even if you’re not an opera buff. The 2014 programme (20 June - 7 September) includes Bizet’s Carmen, Verdi’s Aida and Turandot and Madame Butterfly by Puccini. We can arrange tickets either as part of a stay in Verona or as an excursion from our Lake Garda resorts or from Lake Iseo.
