Italy, Lake Garda
Peschiera is situated where Lake Garda’s waters flow southwards to form the River Mincio. Striking medieval walls fortify the river borders of the Old Town. Peschiera’s focal point is the delightful pedestrianised centre with bustling streets full of all kinds of shops, churches and riverside cafés. Locals and tourists relax here in the evening as colourful lights reflect in the waters of the Mincio. The resort has two beach areas, both a 10 minute walk from the centre, a small harbour and pathways that lead along the old walls. It has a train station and a regular ferry service connects it to other lakeside villages. For families, both the Gardaland and Caneva World theme parks are a short bus ride away.
The Wine Festival in Bardolino (2-6 October) brings the summer season on Lake Garda to a close. Five days celebrating the new harvest of the grapes from which the famous Bardolino wines are made. Plenty of opportunity to taste the wines and sample regional food specialties, all accompanied by musical concerts ending in a spectacular firework display over the lake.
A night at the opera in the ancient arena in Verona must surely be one of life’s great experiences even if you’re not an opera buff. The 2014 programme (20 June - 7 September) includes Bizet’s Carmen, Verdi’s Aida and Turandot and Madame Butterfly by Puccini. We can arrange tickets either as part of a stay in Verona or as an excursion from our Lake Garda resorts or from Lake Iseo.
