Magnificently set below a medieval fortress, Salzburg, Austria is one of Europe's loveliest cities and the birthplace of Mozart. On the left bank of the river between the Mönchsberg and Festungsberg lie a maze of narrow cobbled streets, arcaded courtyards and grand tall houses contrasting beautifully with the Cathedral and Residenz Palace from the Baroque, Rococo and Neo-Classical periods.

Art galleries, gardens and museums are plentiful. The 'Sound of Music' with Julie Andrews was filmed here over 40 years ago and the music festival takes place every summer in July and August, flooding Salzburg hotels with eager music lovers.
