Wengen sits on a natural terrace above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. There are many walks starting from the village, offering stunning views of the Jungfrau and the Lauterbrunnen Valley, which is famous for its 72 waterfalls. The Männlichen cable-car and the Wengerneralp mountain railway make the high viewpoints, or trips down to the valley, easily accessible.

An easy walk is from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg by riverside footpaths. Stop at the famous Trümmelbach waterfalls. The good post bus service along the valley means you can choose to walk in one direction only.

For more experienced walkers, try the head of the Lauterbrunnen Valley, where good footpaths lead through forests and alpine meadows to the remote mountain Hotels Tschingelhorn and Obersteinberg. This demanding full day’s walk, is steep in places but the views of the Breithorn with lunch at one of these hotels is more than worth the effort.

William Tell Express

3-Centre Rail & Boat Holiday

Lake Lucerne is a region steeped in history and romance. Local legend tells the tale of William Tell and his part in Switzerland’s struggle for independence. It is on this beautiful lake that the world’s largest fleet of magnificently restored nostalgic paddle steamers operates the ‘William Tell Express’. This holiday offers the opportunity to visit 3 of Switzerland’s most fascinating regions - the Bernese Oberland, Lake Lucerne, and the Ticino. You will travel by the efficiency of the Swiss railway network, as well as on board one of the historic paddle steamers - ‘Stadt Luzern’, ‘Gallia’, ‘Schiller’, ‘Uri’ or ‘Unterwalden’. During your paddle steamer journey to Fluelen, you will have lunch as you cruise, and a commentary will explain the landmarks. From Fluelen a train will carry you through deep ravines and dramatic mountains, travelling to the sun-drenched climes of Italian-speaking lakeside resorts Locarno or Lugano.
