civilisations. The country is now emerging
from transitional period and is fast
becoming one of Europe’s ‘must see’
destinations. Immerse yourself in history
and culture with a tour that will take
you to some of Albania’s most interesting
places, as well as Montenegro and Macedonia.
Begin in seaside town of Durres, from
where you visit the historical towns
of Berat and Apollonia, plus the beautiful
beaches in the south of Montenegro. From Pogradec see the stunning Lake Ohrid, travel into Macedonia, to Struga and Ohrid town on the southeast side of the lake for another perspective. Explore the capital, Tirana and visit Kruja to find out more about Albania’s national hero, Skanderbeg.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Tirana (Tue) Arrival in Tirana Airport and transfer to Durres for 3 nights.
Day 2: Berat - Apollonia (Wed) Morning excursion to Berat, the “Town of a Thousand Windows”. Visit the fortress, built on a hill, with its churches, including the Cathedral of St Nicholas which now houses the “Onufri” museum. Afternoon is spent in Apollonia, one of Albania’s best known archeological sites. Visit the amphitheatre, see the old town Wall, the Monument of Agonothetes and the Church of Saint Mary. Travel back to Durres for dinner.
Day 3: Ulcinj – Shkoder - Durres (Thur) In the morning travel to Ulcinj, which has some of the most beautiful beaches in Montenegro. Visit in the old town of Ulcinj which overlooks the shore. Travel to Shkoder, one of the biggest cities in northern Albania. Visit in the castle of Rozafa and discover the legend of its history. Return to Durres for evening meal.
Day 4: Pogradec (Fri) In the morning transfer to Pogradec, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located near Lake Ohrid, you will be well situated with free time to explore this beautiful lake. Dinner and overnight in Pogradec 2 nights.
Day 5: Struga - Ohrid (Sat) After breakfast, travel to Struga, on the Macedonian side of Lake Ohrid. Visit the Kalishta monastery which dates back to the 16th century, then visit Sveti Naum monastery, in a wonderful location on the southeast side the lake, followed by a sightseeing tour of Ohrid city. Return to Pogradec for dinner.
Day 6: Kruja - Tirana (Sun) After breakfast, departure to Kruja, a medieval town with a mountainside location. An old bazaar leads you up to the castle of the national hero Skanderbeg. Visit town’s castle which houses the Skanderbeg Museum. Transfer to Tirana and enjoy time at leisure to explore Albania’a capital city. 2 nights’ stay in Tirana.
Day 7: Tirana (Mon) A morning sightseeing tour of Tirana. Starting in Skanderbeg square, visit the National History Museum, Ethem Bey Mosque and Clock Tower. Continue to the main boulevard and the government buildings and Academy of Fine Arts. In the afternoon, enjoy free time in Tirana, followed by dinner.
Day 8: (Tue) Leave for Tirana airport and return to the UK, or return to Durres for a relaxing holiday extension by the Adriatic coast.
