Itinerary: Grand Austrian Tour
Day 1: Salzburg (Wed)
Travel to Salzburg airport from where the coach takes you to the Hotel Gablerbräu, in the centre of Salzburg’s old town. Unwind from the day’s travelling over dinner and meet your Inghams tour guide to discuss the tour events.
Day 2: Salzburg (Thu)
A full-day tour around the beautiful Salzkammergut Lake District. We visit Mondsee and St.Gilgen, both attractive lakeside resorts. Mondsee is famous for the ‘Sound of Music’ wedding church and St. Gilgen for Mozart’s statue. On to picturesque St. Wolfgang and time to treat yourself to a coffee at the lakeside White Horse Inn. Hallstatt is the next pretty lakeside village we visit. Returning to Salzburg we take a stroll after dinner through Salzburg’s old town, which is full of atmosphere and particularly lovely at night. There is free time to take the lift up to the Mönchsberg (approx. £2 return) for panoramic city views.
Day 3: Salzburg (Fri)
A morning visit to the Hellbrunn Palace watergardens just outside Salzburg is followed by free time to discover the city sights on your own.
Day 4: Vienna (Sat)
After breakfast, we travel to the delightful old town of Steyr and, after a short stop, on to Melk which is dominated by the magnificent abbey. Here you may board a Danube steamer for a two-hour optional cruise to Krems, travelling through the rolling countryside of the Wachau valley, Austria’s wine-growing region (approx. £18). Rejoin the coach at Krems and continue to Vienna, arriving at the Hotel Lassalle late afternoon.
Day 5: Vienna (Sun)
After visiting the splendid Schönbrunn Palace, we drive past the lovely Belvedere Palace and around Vienna’s famous ‘Ringstrasse’, viewing the State Opera House and ‘Imperial’ Hofburg Palace along the way. The afternoon is then free to relax. In the evening we make an optional visit to the wine growing village of Grinzing with traditional ‘schrammel music’ (with romantic violins) and dinner (£23 approx.).
Day 6: Graz (Mon)
Depart Vienna and travel to Graz, provincial capital of Styria. After lunch, there is free time to explore this lovely old town which was voted Europe’s ‘Cultural Capital’ in 2003. Continue on to Villach, Carinthia and the welcoming Hotel Alte Post.
Day 7: Villach (Tue)
After a free morning in Villach, we drive through southern Austria’s lush farming valleys, via the little market town of Spittal, and onto Lienz, the capital of East Tirol. This colourful market town is set amidst stunning mountain scenery. After dinner at the hospitable Hotel Sonne in Lienz, join the Tyrolean folk dancing evening (approx. £14).
Day 8: Lienz (Wed)
A full-day optional excursion to the spectacular Italian Dolomites mountains, includes visits to the Alpine ski resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo and the beautiful Lake Misurina surrounded by majestic 10,000 ft. peaks (approx. £20).
Day 9: Tyrol (Thu)
Depart Lienz and drive via the pretty mountain village of Heiligenblut, along the magnificently engineered Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Take in the stunning views of the glaciers and mountains along the way, including the Grossglockner itself, Austria’s highest peak (12,458 ft.) Continue on via Bruck, Mittersill and Pass Thurn to picturesque and internationally renowned Kitzbühel, before reaching the attractive village of Seefeld in Tyrol. Stay at Hotel Schönruh.
Day 10: Tyrol (Fri)
A morning excursion around Innsbruck, Tirol’s historic capital. On the way we view the impressive Olympic ski jump and rooftop restaurant at Berg Isel (designed by London-based architect Zaha Hadid) and the beautiful Wilten Basilica. Return to Seefeld and enjoy the afternoon at leisure. Later there is the chance to join the optional Tyrolean Evening in Innsbruck (approx. £14).
Day 11: Salzburg/Innsbruck (Sat)
Join our coach transfer from Seefeld to Salzburg or Innsbruck airport.

Convenient stops are made en-route and at lunch times. All excursions are included in the holiday price except where these are described as ‘optional’. Prices based on 2007 prices and are payable in Euros. Itinerary may vary slightly and it may be necessary to use different hotels. The tour is quite strenuous with a considerable amount of walking so we do not recommend it to those with walking difficulties.
