Wildschönau Valley, Tirol 2,700 ft
A haven of peace and tranquility
Wildschönau means ‘wild and beautiful’
and this valley is certainly one of
the most glorious in Tyrol with lovely,
rolling hills and a special rural character.
The main village is Niederau which
houses a pretty church, friendly cafés,
bars and a few shops. The central Markbachjoch
gondola lift opens up numerous paths,
one of which leads to ‘Käsealm’ for
fresh milk or cheese. Further into
the valley is fairytale Oberau which
comprises a magnificent church, small
shops and some fine old buildings.
Wherever you stay, a regular bus serves
the whole valley. Beyond Oberau, from Mühltal, a unique scenic region unfolds through the Kundl gorge, rich in semi-precious rocks and minerals. The valley has 3 open air pools plus tennis, riding and cycling and is favourably placed for excursions.
