Austria’s Festival City of Music

Magnificently set below a medieval fortress,
Salzburg is one of Europe’s loveliest
cities and the birthplace of Mozart.
Lying beside the winding river
Salzach and surrounded by mountains,
Salzburg’s picturesque and historic
old city is a recognised World Heritage
site. On the left bank of the river
between the Mönchsberg and Festungsberg
lie a maze of narrow cobbled streets,
arcaded courtyards and grand tall houses
contrasting beautifully with the Cathedral
and Residenz Palace from the Baroque,
Rococo and Neo-Classical periods.
Art galleries, gardens and museums are also plentiful. The ‘Sound of Music’ with Julie Andrews was filmed here over 40 years ago and the town’s prestigious music festival takes place every summer between July and August.
