An inspirational tour at a relaxed pace
with daily walking opportunities amidst
some of the most stunning scenery Iceland
has to offer. After three days exploring
Reykjavik, with optional excursions
to the Snaeffelsnes and Reykjanes peninsulas,
Blue Lagoon and whale-watching, we
stay in just two further hotels. In
the south we visit the famous Geysir
hotsprings, Gullfoss ‘Golden Waterfalls’
and Thingvellir National Park. We enjoy
a day trip to the fascinating geothermal
area of Landmannalaugar and a dip in
a natural hot springs. Next we cross
the barren volcanic wastelands of the central desert highlands close to Mt Hekla with spectacular views of Vatnajokull’s distant ice caps. In the north we visit Husavik, Dettifoss Waterfalls in the Jokulsa River Canyon, and the bizarre moonscape of Lake Myvatn’s lava formations, volcanic craters and bubbling mud pools. For nature lovers there are plenty of walking opportunities, spectacular birdlife and a memorable whale watching boat trip.

ITINERARY

Days 1-3: Reykjavik A free day sightseeing in Reykjavik before joining our tour bus for an evening drive We drive along the Tjornes peninsaula, rich in bird life. Then Asbyrgi Canyon and a walk amidst the strange rock formations of Jokulsargljufur National Park before arriving at Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall.
Day 9: Whale Watching - Lake Myvatn (Friday) Enjoy a 3 hour whale watching trip (weather permitting) from the picturesque fishing village of Husavik. Close encounters with dolphins, minke and humpback whales are common. On to Lake Myvatn, a beautiful and strange moonscape with bizarre lava formations, bubbling mud pools, steam vents and thousands of birds. We stroll through Dimmuborgir lava field culminating in a walk to the rim of Hverfjall ash crater.
Day 10: Akureyri - Reykjavik (Saturday)Today we return south via Akureyri, the capital of the north. We cross beautiful Oxnadalur mountain pass and on through ever changing scenery to Skagafjordur for an introduction to the Icelandic horse and Glaumbaer turf farm museum before arriving back in Reykjavik.
Day 11: Reykjavik - UK (Sunday*) Time for last minute shopping before transferring to the airport for your flight home. * Manchester flight guests have additional night in Reykjavik, flying home on Monday.
