Italy’s green heart is a walker’s paradise

Pescasseroli is in the Abruzzo National
Park, a protected landscape of ancient
beech woods, lakes and rocky outcrops.
Here the Park’s mascot, the Marsican
brown bear, still survives. This unspoilt
environment also supports wolves, chamois
deer and golden eagle. In the past,
Pescasseroli was an agricultural centre
and shepherds would set out with their
flock on their annual pilgrimage to
new pasture. These old tracks now form
the basis of a network of walking paths
through forests and along hillsides
to dramatic viewpoints. The little
town is still a centre of leatherwork, woodcarving and wrought iron and is a good base for a fascinating range of excursions.
