Umbria
Set in rural Umbria near the Tuscany
border, Trasimeno is an ideal base
from which to explore these two regions.
Assisi, Perugia, Siena and Florence
are all accessible in a day. Castiglione
lies on the south-western shore
of the lake. Its old walled town
overlooks the lake and is a delight
to explore. Passignano (main picture)
sits on the northern shore. Its historic
centre of cobbled streets is dominated
by an imposing fortress. Both resorts
have lake bathing and ferry services
to the islands of Maggiore and Polvese
and excellent restaurants serving local cuisine. There is also plenty of walking to enjoy in the Trasimeno National Park, as well as a fascinating etruscan history to explore.
