The colourful Berber capital of the south
The city of Marrakech lies in palm fringed
oasis with a backdrop of the Atlas
mountains. The French style boulevards
lined with orange trees contrast with
the red ramparts of the old city. At
the centre stands the towering Koutoubia
mosque and the famous Djemaa El Fna
square. The ambience of the square
changes through the day, from a colourful
fruit and vegetable market to an evening
open-air entertainment centre with
crowds of people enjoying the performances
of acrobats, snake charmers, dancers
and fire-eaters, whilst eating at the
various food stalls. The Saadian Tombs, Menara gardens and Koutoubia mosque must be seen and a walk through the winding alleyways of the Medina is a must. This gives you the chance to bargain for leather goods, gold and silver jewellery, carpets, rugs, perfumes, herbs and spices in the souks.
