Voted Norway’s most beautiful city
Ålesund is a bustling port and fascinating
seaside town facing the Atlantic Ocean
at the entrance to a region of outstanding
natural beauty and some of Norway’s
most dramatic fjords. The town was
recently voted the most beautiful in
Norway and was totally rebuilt in Art
Nouveau style, with a myriad of turrets,
spires and medieval ornaments, after
a devastating fire in 1904. In addition
to its many museums and impressive
ocean aquarium there is a variety of
interesting day trips to the small
islands and skerries of local fishing
communities dating back to the Viking era, plus round trips to the famous Geirangerfjord and Sunnmøre Alps. As well as making an excellent destination in its own right, for a week or long weekend, Ålesund can be enjoyed as part of our new Fjord Explorer tour .
