3-centre holiday which combines France
with Switzerland and provides the opportunity
to see 3 world-famous mountains - the
Mont Blanc, Matterhorn and Eiger. Chamonix,
Zermatt and Grindelwald are all lively
Alpine resorts, full of character,
and popular with both climbers and
non-climbers alike! First stop is Chamonix
in France with the Mont Blanc providing
a magnificent backdrop to the resort.
Onto Switzerland via Martigny and the
Mont Blanc Express, passing forests
and waterfalls, to reach car-free Zermatt, overlooked by the Matterhorn. Last stop is Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland, home of the Eiger and the start of numerous walking trails. In each resort, a huge variety of excursions by mountain railway and cable-car abound, and walkers will be delighted to find such a wide range of walking possibilities available. An Inghams representative will be on hand in each resort to help you choose the best excursions, sightseeing and walks. The option of 1st class rail is available from Chamonix onwards, and is highly recommended.
ITINERARY
Day 1 Fly to Geneva, with coach transfer to Chamonix for a 3 or 4 night stay. Explore the lively atmospheric town of Chamonix, the home of Alpine tourism with its unbeatable range of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. Take a trip up the spectacular Aiguille du Midi on one of Europe’s highest cable cars and don’t miss the fabulous ride on the famous rack railway to 1900 metres to admire the stunning Mer de Glace glacier. Take a day trip to the famous market in Annecy, or take advantage of the superb free guest card entitling you to free bus and train travel throughout the Chamonix Valley, as well as reductions on a number of services and attractions.
Day 4 or 5 Travel by rail to Zermatt (approx. 4 hrs) for a 3 or 4 night stay. Once in Zermatt, why not join the Gornergrat railway to view the glaciers above, or just marvel at the stunning backdrop of the Matterhorn? Or spend the afternoon at the fascinating Matterhorn Museum, giving an insight into Zermatt and it’s mountaineering history. There’s lots to discover in this charming traffic-free village.
Day 8 Continue by rail to Grindelwald (approx. 41?2 hrs) for a 3 or 4 night stay. Travel via Brig and the Loetschberg tunnel to Spiez, along the shores of Lake Thun and on to Grindelwald, situated at the foot of the majestic Eiger. Whilst staying here, a trip up to the ‘Jungfraujoch’ is a must - post a card from Europe’s highest post office! Or, make the most of the fantastic views and wonderful walking. Spend some time on the lakes of Interlaken - Lake Thun and Lake Brienz - to visit the attractive villages and impressive castles along the shores. Day 11 or 12 Travel by train from Grindelwald to the airport for your flight home (approx. 3 ½ hrs).
