The symbols of old divisions are disappearing, but differences remain - the west of the city is more modern and cosmopolitan whilst the east retains more of Berlin’s character and traditional architecture. The Brandenburg Gate, Charlottenburg and Sanssouci Palaces, Kaiser Wilhelm Church and Alexanderplatz are the important sights, whilst fascinating museums such as the Pergamon are a must. The Checkpoint Charlie museum and remnants of the wall are a poignant reminder of the past. For entertainment, Berlin nightlife is legendary - cabarets, jazz clubs, theatres and concerts, or informal cafes and bars.
