In Lisbon they say that “to waken in the morning is like being re-born”, and after just a few hours in the city it is easy to see why. A charming city, clean, bright and fresh, where old and new live in complementary harmony. The Castelo de Sao Jorge (St.George’s castle) is the best starting point to survey Lisbon. Walk down from here through the Alfama, a charming maze of twisting alleys and tilting houses, then take the inexpensive funicular up to the bohemian Bairro Alto district. Take the train along the waterside to explore the Discoveries’ Monument and Tower of Belem, or on to elegant Estoril, home to exiled Royalty, and the fishing village of Cascais.
