Kyoto, Japan's capital until 1867, is the cultural heartland of Japan. There are enough temples, castles and museums to keep those interested in Japanese culture busy for weeks. Visit the famous Nijo castle and Kiyomizu Temple for an excellent view of Kyoto. The Gion district, where the world famous Geishas and Maikos often reside is also where many of the traditional Japanese wooden houses are found, and from mid-March the cherry blossom in the city's gardens and parks is astonishingly beautiful.
