A charming traffic-free village reached by cable-car from the Lauterbrunnen valley, Mürren is a favourite with British skiers - in fact this is the birthplace of British alpine skiing. Mürren is a cluster of traditional chalets, set dramatically on a terrace above the valley, and overlooked by the impressive Schilthorn at almost 10,000ft. For beginners, the nursery slopes are in the village, and the resort is a fantastic base for intermediates with good long red runs, as well as the famous ‘Kandahar’ run. Non-skiers will enjoy the variety of winter walking trails, as well as the stunning scenery. Visits to Wengen and Grindelwald are recommended for skiers and non-skiers alike, and in the evenings the mood is relaxed, with a few rustic bars and cafés. For piste map see Grindelwald page 229.
