Situated amongst the beautiful scenery of the Bernese Oberland, right at the heart of the Jungfrau Region, lie the picture postcard villages of Wengen & Mürren. These two little traffic free villages are the perfect place to relax and enjoy everything the Swiss Alps have to offer.
You reach Wengen by cog railway from Lauterbrunnen. It is the ideal location for exploring the Jungfrau Region with the train continuing up to Kleine Scheidegg and a cable car to the top of the Männlichen mountain.
The mighty Jungfrau towers over the village and Wengen’s main street is lined with sunny terraces where you can relax with a drink. There is a multitude of hiking paths and stunning viewpoints and Interlaken is only 50 minutes away with the beautiful lakes of Thun and Brienz.
Mürren is located on the opposite side of the Lauterbrunnen valley. It is only accessible by cable car. Again, the village is a walker’s paradise – the North Face trail and the Mountain View trail are particular favourites and provide stunning views.
Mürren is also the starting point for the trip to the Schilthorn. The revolving restaurant at the top of the mountain was made famous in the James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
Enjoy a leisurely lunch before learning about the making of the film in Bond World 007. Afterwards, admire the views from the Skyline Walk and (if you are feeling brave enough) attempt the Thrill Walk. This cliff face walkway opened last summer and features cable walkways, glass floors and wire mesh tunnels – try to enjoy the views at the same time!
The Lauterbrunnen valley, which separates Wengen and Mürren, is known as the valley of 72 waterfalls. Trummelbach, is a series of ten falls, located inside a mountain. They drain the meltwater from the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, carrying up to 20,000 litres of water per second.
The Jungfrau region has over 500km of marked walking paths, ranging from gentle strolls to alpine paths leading to glacier mountain huts and stunning views. Heading further afield there is a wealth of fascinating places to visit – Schynige Platte with its alpine gardens, Grindelwald, and the capital city Bern to name just a few.
