The Spy Who Skied Me

You can always bank on us to tell you about skiing, but in this blog we’re going to spoil you and combine it with the adventures of the world’s most famous secret agent – 007. Bond meets the slopes and here are his greatest hits!

ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE – 1969

Bond on two ski’s and then one during the most exciting Bond on snow moment ever captured on film. The cream of German skiing, photographed by Willy Bognor, Lazenby doubled by legendary stuntman Vic Armstrong and edited by future Bond director John Glen. Spectacular!

THE SPY WHO LOVED ME – 1977

So Bond is being chased on skis by a number of Russian gunmen out to cause him no good. He has nowhere else to go so he skis off the edge of a cliff, the music stops…you can hear the wind and your heart beating a little faster. Rick Sylvester assumes the free-fall position and pulls a ripcord. A union Jack parachute is deployed and the James Bond theme is heard announcing to the world that this man really can do it all. Rick hasn’t stopped talking about that jump. Can you blame him? Mount Asgard takes second billing here as the location for the jump, but it will go down in Bond history as a classic.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – 1981

The sight of a bobsleigh run is always very exciting, but in this Bond adventure Willy Bognor and Remy Julienne took it a stage further. Seeing a bobsleigh team being chased by Bond who in turn is being chased by a motorbike was a truly awesome sight. The Julienne boys Michel and Dominique taking turns riding the chase bike or doubling Roger Moore in some of his tumbles. Pat Banta doubled Roger during this chase too. Sadly stuntman Paolo Rigon was killed during filming in this very sequence. It’s something that should never happen, but sadly fate deals its hand and we lose a fine young man with a big career ahead of him. The brilliance of this sequence is left as his legacy.

A VIEW TO A KILL – 1985

Roger Moore returns to the snow again with Willy Bognor and a host of world champion skiers to create havoc on the piste. Aided by a brand new snow board sequence and the customary Beach Boys music track it was to be Roger’s final outing as 007.

THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS – 1987

A new Bond in Timothy Dalton and a new approach to a ski chase. The bad guys ski through the powdery snow chasing Bond and his leading lady in a cello case! Hey it’s a new slant and works too. The difficult thing was stopping the actors from sliding away and never being seen again. Luckily stunt coordinator Paul Weston was on hand to make sure all was well.

THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH – 1999

Brosnan turned up in the snow and caused chaos on the slopes. Explosions, para-hawks swarming all over him and a leading lady who just kept screaming for his ears only! Chamonix in France was ideal for this exciting chase. Filming in the Avalanche season had its problems but Bond lived to fight another day.
