Discover the highlights of the Cinque Terre and Portofino on this fantastic self-guided tour that offers a great introduction to Liguria. You'll be based in the gorgeous town of Sestri Levante, which is the perfect base for exploring. Visit the five coastal villages that make up Italy's most well-known UNESCO World Site and enjoy discovering the hidden gems of this stunning coastal region, a dinner at your hotel and the incredible views of the cliff top villages.
Day 1: Fly into Nice or Genoa where your group transfer will be waiting to whisk you away to the Grand Hotel Villa Balbi, located in Sestri Levante which is a stunning seaside town tucked into the emerald waters of the Gulf of Tigullio. You will have to unpack and settle in before exploring the towns of Sestri Levante and Lavagna on your own time before returning to the hotel for dinner which can be taken either in the ornate dining room or outside on the terrace.
Day 2: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel before travelling to the seaside town of Monterosso al Mare which is one of the five beautiful villages located within the Cinque Terre. As the village is renowned for its lemon trees, olives and grapes, it seems only fitting to head to the local wine shop to sample a glass of the white wine for which the region is so well known. From there, you will use your Cinque Terre rail card to travel to the remaining villages: Vernazza (famous for its fishing and olive oil), Corniglia (perched high on the rocks and surrounded by vineyards), Manarola (whose local wine ‘Sciacchetra’ boasts a recipe not changed from Roman times) and Riomaggiore (whose mountains hide the Via dell’Amore – a 1km long pedestrian street overlooking the sea, which historically allowed lovers from both regions to meet).
After exploring these five villages, you will take dinner in one of the local restaurants and enjoy the fruits of the region – not to mention another glass of wine! - before returning to the hotel.
Day 3: After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, you will travel to Santa Margherita Ligure and from here take the boat to the world famous resort of Portofino. Once a mere humble fishing village, Portofino has become a hub for the rich and famous with its boutique shops, old cobbled streets and colourful houses. Here you can stroll through the town square overlooking the superyachts in the harbour in a cloud of honeysuckle, the scent of which drifts through the piazetta through the summer and autumn months. You will be able to visit Al Faro di Portofino which is the scenic lighthouse adorning the cliff tops of Portofino. After a morning of walking and site seeing, be sure to reward yourself with a cocktail at the Al Faro Bar just next door and revel in the true Portofino lifestyle – sipping an aperitivo and overlooking the gorgeous azure bay.
You can also take a further optional excursion to the Abbey of San Fruttuoso which can only be reached on foot or by boat which only emphasizes the peaceful wooded surroundings of this beautiful 10th century structure.
Day 4: Transfer back to Nice/Genoa airport for your return flight to the UK
