Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most recognisable images of Italy – a 50-kilometre-long coastline of plunging cliffs topped with sky-scraping viewpoints. The towns step down the cliffs in a jumble of pastel houses and church domes, before fetching up at tiny harbours.

Although alike in looks, each place has its own forte. Ravello is known for its terraced gardens and clifftop summer music festival. Amalfi has a grand eighth-century cathedral, while Positano offers the Byzantine Church of Santa Maria Assunta.

Amalfi Coast holidays also leave you perfectly poised for exploring the rest of the region – from Sorrento, Ischia and Capri to Naples, Pompeii and Vesuvius.

Things to do in resort

Pompeii & Herculaneum

These Roman towns were destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in a devastating eruption in 79 AD, burying them in the heavy volcanic ash that helped preserve them for centuries. Take a guided tour and learn all about these once-thriving towns, viewing preserved-mosaics and plaster cast displays that give you a real understanding of ancient Rome.

Footpath of the Gods

This three-hour scenic hike starts or ends in Nocelle (a short bus ride from Amalfi) and boasts spectacular scenery and magnificent coastal views with Capri in the distance.

Paestum

Once one of Italy’s biggest ancient Greek cities, Paestum is now an archaeological site with well-preserved Greek temples and is a couple of hours drive from the Amalfi Coast. Make sure to stop at an authentic mozarella farm along the way, too.

Explore the Coast

The towns along the Amalfi Coast are easily explored by regular local buses or boats that meander along the coastline during the summer. Hop on a boat at Amalfi and visit beautiful towns like Positano, or sail across to the stunning isle of Capri. Buses skillfully drive round the coast's hairpin bends to towns like Ravello, so all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the panoramic views.
