Hotel Capizzo's up on the hillside above the bay of Citara, which means you get incredible views out to sea, especially at sunset. Winding stone paths thread though Mediterranean gardens to the rooms, pool and restaurant. Upgrade to half board and dine at the Capizzo Restaurant or dine à la carte outside on the terrace at the Corinthia Restaurant. The head chef is inspired by local produce, the landscape and the island's culture, so expect regional dishes, fresh seafood and local wine.

We love the hotel's geothermal pool and you'll find the Poseidon Thermal Gardens nearby too. The pretty churches and watchtower of Forio are just a few minutes’ drive along the coast – or you can walk there via the scenic coastal footpath. There's a bus stop just 30 metres from the hotel and routes that connect most of the island, so getting out and exploring couldn't be easier. The friendly staff are always on hand to offer up advice and recommendations should you need anything.

Ischia is an example of island life done the Italian way. It’s the biggest island in the Bay of Naples, laying out medieval castles, clifftop botanical gardens, sandy beaches, hot springs and lively harbour towns along its coastline.

The centre of the island is another story altogether. Here, Mount Epomeo scrapes the clouds. Hikers tackle its sloping walking trails, which wander past caves and pine-green forests. You’ll even find the occasional vineyard clinging to the rocky slopes – usually family-run affairs with swooping views over the Bay of Naples.

What to see on an Ischia holiday

You can make a holiday to Ischia as relaxed or adventurous as you like. We love hiking up in the mountain - there are some great trails with amazing sea views and when you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the whole island. Don't worry if you'd rather take it easy though - the coastal routes are just as nice with the added bonus of being able to stop for a coffee or wine as you go.

Other highlights include hopping across to the little island of Procida, relaxing on a sandy beach or heading to one of the many thermal spas for a bit of pampering.

Things to Do

Things to see and do

Despite it's relatively small size, there's plenty of things to see and do on Ischia from exploring the coastal towns to chilling out in thermal spas. We've listed out some of our must-dos below:

  • Procida: This little island between Ischia and the mainland is one of the Neapolitan Riviera’s best kept secrets. A stunning landscape of pastel-coloured houses lead down to the quaint harbour where you can sample the freshest seafood.
  • La Mortella Gardens: These award-winning botanical gardens are an exquisite blend of exotic flowers and ornate fountains, all carefully arranged to allow glimpses of the glistening Mediterranean.
  • Thermal Spas: Ischia’s volcanic origins means the island is home to numerous thermal spas. Many hotels have wellness centres using the natural waters, or head to one of the thermal gardens that combine pools with lush green surroundings.
  • Castello Aragonese: This is one of Ischia's most visited sights. It dates back to medieval times and juts out from the island's east coast. There's several temples and frescoed catacombs to explore.
  • Head to the beach: There's plenty to choose from here - all of them with white sands and inviting sea waters.

Food & drink

On the coast you'll get to enjoy plenty of fresh seafood. Some of the best can be found on Procida, where you can watch the fishermen bring in the catch of the day before sitting back to enjoy it with a glass of wine in a family-run restaurant. Head a bit inland and one of the most popular dishes is coniglio all’ischitana, a rustic rabbit stew.

Ischia's a fantastic resort for walkers. There's lots of routes that cater to all abilities. For the best views, head up the well-marked trails on Mount Epomeo - its peak is 789 metres high and you'll be treated to panoramic views the whole way. We love the coastal trails too and planning a walk between the towns and beaches. You'll find some great forests inland as well as botanical gardens that are a real pleasure to walk around.

They have a strictly zero kilometre ethos when it comes to the ingredients - so expect delicious, fresh, local meals.

The hotel's Corinthia Restaurant has an à la carte menu and is open for lunch and dinner. The modern interior dining room has lovely views of the sea, but for the best views opt for the outdoor terrace.
