If you want incredible sea views on your holiday, Hotel Mediterraneo is perfect. It's in the lovely village of Sant'Angelo, just outside the centre of Sorrento, and looks out over the bay from the edge of the cliff. It'll take about 25 minutes to walk into Sorrento but there's a complimentary shuttle if you don't fancy walking. There's also lots to see and do in Sant'Angelo itself including some great authentic restaurants and bars.

The hotel's been carefully designed to make the most of its location. We love the Vesuvio Rooftop Restaurant - fill up on fantastic local dishes while you enjoy the views from the terrace. There's also the White Bar where you can get signature cocktails and complimentary appetisers that are served in time to watch the sun set over the bay. If you're celebrating or just fancy something special, reserve a table at the Vista Sky Bar where the views are uninterrupted and you can enjoy the evening entertainment of DJ sets or live jazz (open during summer only - Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, weather dependent).

The décor here is fresh and modern and the rooms are decorated in a Mediterranean style with splashes of blue. Upgrade to a Sea View or Superior Room if you like the idea of waking up to views of the Gulf of Naples from your window. The hotel's grounds and gardens are well cared for. You'll find the pool here, where you can relax on the loungers and enjoy refreshments from the nearby bar and restaurant. You'll also have direct access to La Marinella beach via a lift close to the hotel (beach services payable locally). The Lepietre Spa is another place to relax during your stay. You can book and pay for treatments and the use of the sauna, whirlpool and steam room locally.

Transfer time: approx. 1 hour by private car from Naples airport.

Sorrento is best known for its remarkable views. From its perch on the Sorrentine Peninsula, it peers straight over the Bay of Naples to Mount Vesuvius. Looking inwards, you’ll find a town with a historic centre of cobbled streets and craft shops. Wander the shady lemon groves of the Museum Correale, catch a concert in the Franciscan Cloisters or hunt out a bottle of freshly-made limoncello liqueur.

What to see on a Sorrento holiday

Sorrento doubles as an ideal base for day trips along the dramatic Campania coast. Jump on a train to nearby Naples or stop off in Pompeii before hiking to the top of Mount Vesuvius. The Amalfi Coast is a bus ride away (with incredible views along the route!) so spend some time in Positano and Amalfi.

The islands of Capri and Ischia are both within easy reach too with regular ferries throughout the summer.

Things to Do

Things to see and do

You can easily fill up a whole week or more with things to see and do in Sorrento. There's plenty to explore in the town itself including having lunch at the busy Piazza Tasso, browsing the boutique shops in the little streets and heading to the marina for a seafood dinner. Make sure you head out of town too - some of the Neapolitan Riviera's best sights are an easy day trip away.

  • Amalfi Drive: The Amalfi Drive is one of the most famous roads in the world. Join an excursion or hop on a local bus to enjoy panoramic views along the hairpin roads that hug the cliffs from Sorrento down to Salerno.
  • Pompeii & Herculaneum: These fascinating historical sites are an easy day trip from Sorrento. Famous Pompeii draws hundreds of visitors each day while Herculaneum is lesser known but its location closer to Mount Vesuvius means its better preserved and well worth a visit. We recommend taking a guided tour to learn all about these once-thriving towns.
  • Visit Naples: This coastal city offers an authentic charm and plenty to see and do. It rivals Rome with its wealth of historic monuments and archaeological sites and has lively piazzas filled with restaurants serving some of the region’s best food.
  • Explore the Coast: The towns along the Amalfi Coast are best explored by boat. Take a sunset tour from Sorrento, hop off at Amalfi and visit beautiful towns like Positano, or sail across to the stunning isle of Capri.

Food & drink

There are plenty of restaurants to cater for every palate from traditional trattoria to fine-dining. Sorrento is famous for its fresh seafood, pastas and fresh vegetables. Make sure you try Gnocchi alla Sorrentina, Sorrento's famous pasta dish. Wash it down with a limoncello afterwards.
