The north east coast of Sardinia is known as the Costa Smeralda or Emerald Coast and is home to several smart resorts nestling in sandy coves lapped by crystalline waters. The rugged coastline has amazing rock formations and there are some wonderful views across to the archipelago of La Maddalena; a small group of islands with sandy beaches and turquoise waters. The most famous resort in this area is Porto Cervo, a chic resort full of yachts and designer boutiques that was created in the 1960s by the Aga Khan. Whereas Baja Sardinia, just 7km away, is a little more laid back with some lovely beaches but nonetheless with a lively central square with shops, bars and restaurants. Wherever you choose to stay, you can be assured that there is always a beautiful sandy beach nearby.
