Escorted by an experienced Inghams guide, this 9 or 11-night tour is an excellent overview to Switzerland's special highlights, designed for those seeking a true taste of this stunning country, including unforgettable experiences on two of the most spectacular panoramic journeys in the world, the ‘Bernina’ and ‘Glacier Express’. Traveling as part of a small group from 18-25 guests and featuring the beautiful lakeside setting of Lake Lucerne with its pedestrianised Old Town and nearby Mount Pilatus. Experience the world-famous St. Moritz and ride on board the Glacier Express to the ‘Matterhorn village’ of Zermatt, and then the option to continue on to the dramatic scenery of Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland.
Amongst the highlights are a day excursion on the spectacular ‘Bernina Express’ train from St. Moritz to Tirano near the Italian border, and the rail journey from St.Moritz to Zermatt on the ‘Glacier Express’ where we have arranged for you to enjoy lunch on board. Each of your transfers is by 1st class rail, and your luggage is transported for you between each resort, so all you need to do is sit back and admire the scenery. With a half-fare travel card for reductions on Switzerland’s superb transport network and excursions also included, you have plenty of opportunities to explore, cruise, hike, or simply relax during free time in four of Switzerland’s contrasting ‘Cantons.
Day 1 (Saturday)
Meet your guide at Zurich airport and transfer to the lakeside resort of Lucerne (approx. 1 hour). Check into your hotel and meet your fellow travellers.
Day 2 (Sunday)
Walking tour of Lucerne’s quaint Old Town with its traffic-free streets and frescoed buildings and historic monuments including the must-see ‘Chapel Bridge’. In the afternoon, free time to discover the region, perhaps take a boat ride on the stunning lake with the option to visit Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi for walking terrain and superb views.
Day 3 (Monday)
A day of leisure or activity as there are excellent hiking opportunities here, with easy access from the city via boat and mountain transport to the vast Lake Lucerne region. Perhaps visit the neighbouring resorts of Weggis or Vitznau whilst Interlaken with its lakes Thun and Brienz, is also within easy reach.
Day 4 (Tuesday)
Today we leave Lucerne for the stylish resort of St. Moritz (approx. 4 hours). Relax this afternoon with a gentle stroll down the main promenade, browse the shops and enjoy an optional delicious hot chocolate in one of the many cafés.
Day 5 (Wednesday)
Embark on the spectacular ‘Bernina Express’ panoramic train from St. Moritz for a day trip with seats reserved in 1st class, down to Tirano on the Italian border. Part of the Rhätian railway, this winding mountain route is protected as a UNESCO world heritage site for its outstanding natural beauty. Reaching 2253m, passing through 55 tunnels, and crossing almost 200 bridges along the way, the train takes you ‘from mighty glaciers to swaying palm trees’ all in one day. You will have time to enjoy a stroll or lunch in Tirano before your scenic return journey.
Day 6 (Thursday)
A free day to explore St. Moritz’s splendid Engadine countryside and cool off in one of the region’s lakes. Perhaps take a day hike to Corvatsch or Corviglia for inspiring 360° views along a panoramic trail – guests have unlimited use of resort’s mountain transport included.
Day 7 (Friday)
Depart St. Moritz on the famous ‘Glacier Express’ train to the mountain village of Zermatt (approx. 8 hours). We have reserved a 1st class seat for you and lunch is also included on board this red and white train. Panoramic scenery changes as the route unfolds, meadows give way to dense forests and tall dramatic mountains that can be snow-capped depending on the season.
Day 8 (Saturday)
A free day to explore Zermatt and really soak up the traditional Swiss ambiance. Take a stroll through the enchanting traffic-free streets, discovering the many shops and cafés and discover the Old Village known as ‘Hinterdorf’ home to more than 30 buildings over 500 years old constructed in the traditional style of barns and stores of Upper Valais.
Day 9 (Sunday)
Another free day with the choice to explore independently the 21 mountain cable cars, cog railways and gondolas which open up the vast hiking network or join our escorting guide on an optional excursion during your time in Zermatt. Today we enjoy a journey on the iconic Gornergrat railway and marvel at the backdrop of the Matterhorn.
Day 10 (Monday)
Transfer to Zurich airport for your return journey home (approx. 3 hours) or extend your stay and transfer to the Alpine ‘Eiger village’ of Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland.
Day 11 (Tuesday)
Explore the region independently or join our escorting guide on an optional excursion during your time in Grindelwald, today we visit Europe’s highest train station the Jungfraujoch
Day 12 (Wednesday)
Transfer back to Zurich airport for your return journey home (approx. 3 hours).

Your first three nights will be spent at the four-star The Romantik Hotel Wilden Mann in Lucerne. This is a charming, comfortable hotel located right in the heart of Lucerne's beautiful historic old town. Dating back to 1860, the hotel has many original features and the rooms are individually-styled to give a traditional charm and boutique feel. The railway station and harbour for excursions are only 8 minutes' walk away.
Your hotel in St. Moritz is the lovely Hotel Monopol (which we feature in our ski programme). This welcoming hotel has a relaxed atmosphere and boasts fabulous views over the resort. It enjoys a convenient central location close to the amenities and just a short walk from the Corviglia funicular. A little oasis of luxury with 73 spacious rooms, a rooftop spa and outstanding service. Restaurant Mono offers Italian-Mediterranean cuisine.
The Parkhotel Beau Site in Zermatt is one of favourite within our programme. It enjoys a fantastic location just 3 minutes' walk (300m) to Zermatt's main street and 5 minutes' to the Sunnegga lift for access to the hiking area. Guests here can marvel at some of the best views over the village and towards the Matterhorn from it's slightly elevated position. Rooms are well-furnished and have a bath, bathrobes and slippers, satellite TV, minibar, telephone, hairdryer, radio and safe and Wi-Fi. Evening meal here is a set 5 course.
Hotel Belvedere in Grindelwald is family-run and enjoys superb panoramic views of the surrounding Eiger and Wetterhorn mountains. On its own sun terrace, it is situated just 3 minutes’ walk from the village centre and mountain railway for access to the walking area. The comfortable rooms have satellite TV/radio telephone, air-conditioning, minibar, safe, hairdryer, bathrobes and slippers, tea/coffee-making facilities and are non-smoking.
