Why we love walking in Seefeld

The 650 kilometres of marked walking trails in the Seefeld region mean there's lots to explore. Plus, routes that cater to all abilities, from leisurely strolls for a tasty hut lunch or a family adventure to ticking off bucket-list viewpoints and challenging yourself in the spectacular Karwendel Mountains.

The scenery is picturesque, whichever route you decide to take and after a lovely walk you can have a refreshing dip in one of the main mountain lakes, or enjoy the atmosphere in the bustling town centre.

Guided walks

There's lots of opportunities to join more guided walks when staying at Hotel Schonruh, or the Bergresort. You can book them locally at the hotel.

The Seefeld plateau has a great network of public transport and lifts that make getting around the area really easy.

Lifts

There's five lifts open around Seefeld during the summer, normally from the end of May/beginning of June until October. 

The Rosshütte area takes you up above the Seefeld plateau and has three lifts:

• Standseilbahn (mountain railway/funicular)
• Härmelekopfbahn (cable car)
• Seefelderjochbahn (cable car)

Weekly passes are available for the Rosshütte lifts and are usually around €135 for six days. Individual tickets are also available. The Rosshütte area is a great option if you want to get the best views with minimal effort, or many great hiking routes start from the top of each lift.

The Gschwandtkopf chair lift is in easy walking distance of Seefeld and goes up the Gschwandtkopf mountain. Only individual tickets are available for this lift and at the top you'll find a very pleasant mountain hut with great views.

The final lift is the Katzenkopf, which is a chair lift in nearby Leutasch where you can by individual tickets. 

Buses

Your local guest card (the Plateau Card) is given to you by your hotel's reception and allows you to make local bus journeys free of charge (Wildmoos bus is included from 9 July 2023). Local buses connect you to neighbouring villages of Scharnitz, Leutasch, Reith and Mösern, as well as further afield to Telfs and Mittenwald - make sure to always carry your Plateau Card with you. Timetables and route maps are available locally.

Train

Seefeld is on the mainline train route with easy connections possible to Innsbruck and Munich. The Seefeld to Scharnitz train is free with your Plateau Card. Timetables are available locally.

Inghams Guided Walks are included on your holiday in Seefeld

We’ve included two full-day walks per week in Seefeld, just for Inghams guests. Join a small group and be led by a professional walking guide on some of their favourite trails. It’s a great way to get to know the area. Walks in Seefeld are run by Sport Aktiv.

Walks are available from 27 May - 12 Sep and will run every Monday and Thursday. You can add the walks onto your holiday at the time of booking, through My Booking or by calling us on 01483 319 652.

Gschwandtkopf

The walk up the Gschwandkopf is a rewarding one, which follows a narrow trail through the forest to the idyllic mountain reservoir at the top of the mountain before returning via a path towards the village of Reith and a stop at the Enzianhütte. You’ll enjoy spectacular views and be surrounded by nature the whole way.

• Grade: moderate – challenging (good fitness and sure-footedness required)
• Distance: 14km
• Walking time: 4-5 hours
• Ascent/descent: 400m
• Terrain: mountain roads and narrow forest path (can be uneven and steep in places)
• Useful information: there will be a lunch stop at the Enzianhütte (payable locally)

Explore the Gaistal Valley

This is a gentle walk and the scenery is beautiful with lush green meadows of the Gaistal Valley, forests and surrounding limestone peaks of the mountains. The route starts in the nearby village of Leutasch and stays lower down the valley and following a forest path by the river to the Tillfussalm Hut and the Ganghofer House.

• Grade: easy - moderate (basic fitness and sure-footedness required)
• Distance: 10km
• Walking time: 4-5 hours
• Ascent/descent: 150m
• Terrain: mainly gentler paths (may be uneven in places)
• Useful information: there will be a lunch stop (payable locally) and a bus to and from Leutasch is required (payable locally - approx. €8 return - cash required)

Möserer See to Lottensee

The scenery around the mountain lakes of the Möserersee and Lottensee is beautiful – they’re in a peaceful location, surrounded by nature. The route starts in Seefeld and follows generally gentle paths through forests and meadows, and along the shores of the stunning lakes.

• Grade: easy - moderate (basic fitness and sure-footedness required)
• Distance: 12km
• Walking time: 4-5 hours
• Ascent/descent: 200m
• Terrain: gravel tracks, forest and mountain roads (may be quite uneven in places)
• Useful information: there will be a lunch stop at the Lottensee Hut (payable locally)

Wettersteinhütte and Hämmermoosalm

This walk will take you higher into the mountains for some fantastic views of the Karwendel Mountains. It starts in the village of Leutasch and leads up an initially steep forest road to a narrow walking trail towards the Wettersteinhütte where they serve the tastiest bacon dumplings. The route continues over the interesting Wuziger Steig alpine path to the Hämmermoosalm where the views are breath-taking, and down the Ganghoferweg Path to Leutasch.

• Grade: moderate to challenging (good fitness and sure-footedness required)
• Distance: 10km
• Walking time: 5 hours
• Ascent/descent: 650m
• Terrain: mainly narrow mountain path (can be quite uneven and steep in places)
• Useful information: there will be a lunch stop at the Wettersteinhütte (payable locally) and a bus to and from Leutasch is required (payable locally - approx. €8 return - cash required)

For every walk you will need: suitable walking shoes with good grip, appropriate clothing, sun cream, sunglasses, rain jacket, a warmer layer, rucksack, at least a litre of water, a snack and cash for mountain huts/transport. You may find walking poles useful.

Early booking is strongly recommended as spaces are limited. All walks are subject to availability of local guides, weather conditions and maximum numbers. Planned routes are subject to change. Any distances and ascents/descents stated are approximate. Full details of the walks with the meeting points and routes will be provided to you on arrival. In some instances there may be a small charge for local transport that is payable locally. In resorts where the walks run over more than two days, the day of the walk will be allocated to you by your Rep in your welcome meeting. Where we cannot confirm your preferred option in resort, we will endeavour to offer an alternative subject to the above conditions.

Please ensure you are comfortable with the grade of walk, planned distance covered and terrain before booking. The decision of the guide on the suitability of the walk for you is final and no compensation will be paid where the guide believes, in their professional opinion, that it is not suitable. Please ensure you are well-equipped for the walk have suitable clothing and footwear. Walks are not recommended for guests under 12 years. Any guests under 18 years will need to be accompanied by an adult.

The walking around Seefeld is so beautiful that all walks could be considered a favourite, but here are just a few routes that we really love:

Wildmoos and Mösern Lake

• Easy hike 
• 7.1 kilometres with 250 metres of height gain
• Expect to take around three hours
• Plenty of huts for refreshments

A beautiful loop through picturesque woodland starting from the Mösern Lake, just outside Seefeld. The loop takes you past the Lottensee, a beautiful periodical lake and you'll get excellent views of the Inn valley on the way back.

Gleirschklamm

• Moderate hike
• 13.1 kilometres with 381 metres of height gain
• Expect to take just over four hours
• You'll need to take a packed lunch or snacks for this hike as you only pass one hut

The Gleirschklamm Gorge is wild and beautiful with glacial water flowing through narrow rock passageways. Starting in Scharnitz, this route follows the Isar valley past the Scharnitzeralm and to the gorge. The narrow path through the gorge has wooden walkways in places and is only suitable for the sure-footed. On your return, follow the Hochwaldweg (high wild path) back to Scharnitz.

Königstour (The King's Tour)

• Challenging hike
• 4.4 kilometres with 502 metres of height gain
• Expect to take just over four hours
• Requires hiking experience, sure-footedness and a good head for heights

A panoramic high altitude hike that takes in two summits. Starting from the top of the Seefelderjochbahn this incredible hike summits the Seefelderspitze (2,220 metres) and the Reitherspitze (2,373 metres). After around three hours of tricky walking, including the mountain peaks, you'll reach the Nördlinger Hütte which is a beautiful mountain hut with amazing views. After enjoying some well earned refreshments, the walk to the top of the Härmelekopfbahn takes about an hour. Return to Seefeld on the lift.

Recommended equipment

Comfy walking boots, waterproofs, rucksacks and walking poles are useful for hiking around Seefeld and the surrounding area. There's plenty of places in Seefeld to buy walking equipment or you can rent pole from Kirchmair Sports Shop. The Hotel Seefelderhof offers guests staying there free rental of rucksacks and Nordic walking poles, or if you stay at the Hotel Krumers Post you can borrow walking poles for free.

Walking maps

We recommend Mayr Map 410 or Kompass Map 26 for Seefeld and the Karwendal mountains, which have a scale of 1:25,000 or 1:50,000. The maps show the hiking routes which are numbered and match the yellow signposts around the area. They will have a key which will help you understand the nature of the hiking trail before you set out on your walk.

Walking guidelines

The mountains are a natural paradise, with lots to explore and discover. To help it stay that way, and remain an enjoyable and safe place for everyone, we recommend following our little list of do's and don'ts:

• Plan your route well and don't overestimate yourself
• Check the weather forecast
• Tell someone where you're planning to walk and what time you're expecting to be back
• Take all the recommended equipment
• Make a note of emergency numbers:

  • Mountain Rescue: 140
• Don't leave the marked trails or go onto a glacier without a guide
• Let nature stay wild by not picking alpine flowers (it's illegal in some places) or getting close to/making contact with wild animals
• Always leave gates as you found them
• Leave no trace

Experience the local culture and festivals

Seefeld is a town brimming with life in summer with weekly Tyrolean evenings and open-air concerts at the band stand. Immerse yourself in the local culture by visiting during a festival like Strudelfest, Almabtrieb or the Annual Village Festival. Try local food in the many high quality restaurants or head to the Klosterbrau Grill for some home-brewed beer. Tuesday is market day in Seefeld and the town square comes alive with food, drink and craft stalls.

Explore on two wheels

With over 570 kilometres of trails, you can explore the natural landscape of the Seefeld plateau and surrounding villages by bike really easily. Families will love the beginner routes, and keener mountain bikers can try some bike-and-hike routes that will get you really high into the spectacular Karwendal mountains. If you prefer your biking less strenuous, hire an e-bike and allow the battery to take the pressure off your legs as you enjoy the stunning views.

Activities for the whole family

Open the children's eyes to the mountain wilderness and help them develop an interest in the natural world. Discover child-friendly walking routes and themed trails, have fun on mountain adventure playgrounds, or make a splash in the outdoor swimming pools. Children will love it here just as much as you will.

Take a refreshing dip in the mountain lakes and pools

Enjoy the peaceful location of the idyllic Möserer See lake or, head to Mittenwald in Bavaria where you can walk to Lautersee and Ferchensee, two stunning bathing lakes. At the Wildsee, there's two swimming options including a heated outdoor pool and swimming lake. Families with young children will also love the leisure pools in Seefeld, with slides and children's areas.

Climbing in the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains

With a strong, 100-year tradition of climbing in the region, Seefeld is a real hotspot, both for pros coming to take on the iconic Chinesische Mauer - a sheer rockface with more than 170 routes - and beginners just starting out. The Flämenwandl climbing area is a family-friendly location with more than 20 routes. As well as the climbing, there’s seating and a BBQ area, right next to the rushing Leutascher Ache River.

Visit Innsbruck, the capital of the Tyrol

Only 30-40 minutes from Seefeld, you can easily enjoy a day soaking up the culture in Innsbruck. Head to the old town where the architecture and narrow streets take you back in time. See the Golden Roof and the Ambras Castle, or head just out of town to the Swarovski Crystal World. Innsbruck hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, and you can visit the ski jump and enjoy the stunning view from the top. Or head up the Nordkette mountain and see the spectacular Inn valley from above. 

Family activities in Seefeld

Olympiabad Seefeld

Take a visit to the large swimming complex in Seefeld. With a heated indoor and outdoor pool, two waterslides and a sun-bathing lawn, you are set for a day of relaxation while the children enjoy a day of excitement. There are even underwater massage jets, perfect for unwinding.

Nature playgrounds

We love the adventure playground at the Rosshütte middle station and hopefully your children will too. With a mining theme, the unique playground has activities like a tubing slide, air cushion trampolining and scramble netting.

Keep active with sporting facilities

It's all about sports in Seefeld. Keep active even on days when the weather doesn't permit with indoor tennis and paddle tennis courts. You will also find outdoor football pitches and tennis courts. Or, for keen climbers, head to the nearby indoor bouldering centre.

Museum and exhibitions

Do your children have an interest in history? Visit the Ropferstub’m farming museum of the 19th and 20th centuries, or the Holzerhütte museum is a great multimedia exhibition. With your local guest card, you can also get reduced entry to the nearby museums.
