On the banks of the river Salzach and surrounded by mountains, Salzburg’s picturesque and historic old city is a recognised World Heritage site. On the left bank of the river between the Mönchsberg and Festungsberg lie a maze of narrow cobbled streets, arcaded courtyards and grand tall houses contrasting beautifully with the Cathedral and Residenz Palace from the Baroque, Rococo and Neo-Classical periods. Art galleries, gardens and museums are also plentiful. Additionally, the Salzburg Music Festival takes place every year in August and is the city’s premier event.
Art galleries, gardens and museums are plentiful. The 'Sound of Music' with Julie Andrews was filmed here 50 years ago and the music festival takes place every summer in August, flooding Salzburg hotels with eager music lovers.
