Fairytale Oberau in the delightful Wildschönau Valley is home to a magnificent chapel, a handful of shops and some fine old buildings. Wildschönau means 'wild and beautiful' and this is certainly one of the most glorious valleys in the Tyrol, with a special rural character and many rustic mountain alms.
Oberau has its own outdoor swimming pool, and there are some super walks here. North of Oberau there are some moderate walks down to Wörgl and Kundl, while the other side of the valley has some harder walks up to the Marchbachjoch with a gondola down to Niederau. Along the valley there are some good walks to Niederau, Auffach and the other villages. The tourist office runs a super programme of five free guided walks a week including a four-and-a-half hour “moderate” walk from Oberau via the Minz path and the Egghöffe farms to the Boardstadt hut and beyond to the Krangejoch cross (1,387 metres). In addition, a bus service operates up and down the whole valley, enabling you to make the most of this scenic region.

Journey via the romantic village of Reit im Winkl to the Chiemsee, known as the “Bavarian Sea”. The Chiemsee is the largest lake in Bavaria. The biggest of several islands on the lake and accessible only by boat is Herrenchiemsee. The name derives from a sumptuous and wildly extravagant palace built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Marvel at the richly decorated interior and the stunning grounds all modeled on the Palace of Versailles. A fascinating insight into the world of a truly eccentric King.
