Holidays in Tuscany

Explore rolling hills and medieval cities while tasting Italy's best food and wine on a Tuscany holiday

Tuscany’s landscape is iconic. Medieval towns crown the tops of rolling hills surrounded by vineyards and fields of poppies and sunflowers – it’s hard to imagine anywhere more idyllic. The region really has it all. It’s made for walking, cycling, eating, drinking and sightseeing.

What to see on a Tuscany holiday

There’s lots to see and do on a Tuscany holiday. Take a dip in the thermal baths at Montecatini, walk or cycle along Lucca's 16th century walls or try the world-famous Chianti wine at a local vineyard. If relaxation's on the agenda, spend a day on Viareggio’s sandy coast. Get your culture fix with a trip to the region's capital Florence.

Things to see and do in Tuscany

Tuscany is a large region with plenty of sights. The cities in the north are the most popular – Florence, Siena, Pisa and Lucca appear on many tourist’s itineraries. Check out the medieval towers of San Gimignano, exploring winding lanes, artisan workshops and cosy trattorias. We love exploring the coast too. You can cycle along miles of promenade or jump on a train as far as Liguria.

Food & drink

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to wine in Tuscany. There’s plenty of famous labels to try – have fun pairing them with the region’s rich dishes and cheeses. We love a classic Chianti but you can push the boat out and go for the renowned Brunello di Montepulciano. For whites, we recommend Vernaccia di San Gimignano - it’s so good it got a mention in Dante’s Divine Comedy.

The slow food movement champions high quality, seasonal ingredients and sustainable practices, all of which can be found here in Tuscany. You’ll find everything from rich rustic ingredients to fine dining. We love panzanella - fresh tomatoes, basil, and balsamic vinegar, tossed together in a salad with homemade bread to soak up the juices.

Activities

Tuscany’s landscape was made for walking. You don’t want to rush those views! The hills around San Gimignano are some of our favourite routes. They can be a little challenging so make sure you’re prepared with detailed maps and plenty of water. There are several great trails from Montecatini which connect it with Montecatini Alto above and there’s some longer routes up and over the hills of Monte di Pescia.
