Ålesund is a bustling port and fascinating seaside town facing the Atlantic Ocean at the entrance to the region of outstanding natural beauty and some of Norway’s most dramatic fjords. Due to its position, it enjoys more days of sunshine throughout the year than areas deeper into the fjords. After a devastating fire in 1904, the town was totally rebuilt in Art Nouveau style, with a myriad of turrets, spires and medieval ornaments which are still present today. In addition to the many museums, there is a variety of interesting day trips to the surrounding islands and skerries of local fishing communities dating back to the Viking era. Making an excellent destination in its own right, it is great for a week or long weekend (using non stop flights from gatwick on Fridays and Mondays), Ålesund can be enjoyed as part of our Fjord Explorer tour or in combination with a stay in Loen on Nordfjord on our new 'Glaciers & Coast' 2-centre combination.
City Breaks in Bergen, Ålesund or Stavanger
Bergen, Alesund and Stavanger each offer a wealth of cultural attractions and sightseeing opportunities and can be booked as a 3, 4 or 7 night City Break on their own or as part of one of our multi-centre Fjord Tours
In addition to its many museums and impressive ocean aquarium, holidays in Ålesund offer a variety of interesting day trips to the small islands and skerries of local fishing communities dating back to the Viking era, plus round trips to the famous Geirangerfjord and Sunnmøre Alps as well as making an excellent destination in its own right, for a week or long weekend.
