Your second week of skiing, where you move from beginner ski lessons to intermediate lessons can be one your most rewarding ski weeks ever. No longer are you restricted to the blue pistes and nursery slopes – now you can explore the mountains on long, cruising red runs.
This is also an opportunity for you to build on the skills you’ve learnt so far. In the weeks following your beginner lessons you are likely to improve exponentially, as you gain confidence and yet still have the scope to learn new techniques.
Improver skiers are spoilt for choice when it comes to ski resorts. Many places offer an excellent mixture of blue and red runs – making it easy for you to graduate from beginner skiing to intermediate. These are just a selection of our favourites:
Alpe d’Huez, France
The eclectic ski network in Alpe d’Huez makes it perfect for intermediate skiers, providing an opportunity to learn an extensive range of ski techniques. The resort occupies a sunny plateau surrounded by an epic snowbowl, there’s exciting skiing on the Sarenne Glacier, and plenty of wide, cruisy-blue runs.
One of the reasons we love Alpe d’Huez so much is that, while we can take it easy on the blues, there are plenty of challenges out there for intermediate skiers. The long red runs that occupy the Signal de l’Homme section of the mountain are a great place to build your technical proficiency and confidence.
Beginner and intermediate ski lessons with ESF Alpe d’Huez are available through Inghams. Prices start at £134 per person for adults and £169 for children up to the age of 12.
Improver skiers fall in love with Mayrhofen. The lively ski resort in Austria is full of charm; the traditional village atmosphere is complemented by an animated après ski scene full of fantastic bars, cafès and restaurants. Mayrhofen has an energetic vibe that is thoroughly addictive.
Confident improvers will thrive in Mayrhofen’s extensive ski area. Towards the end of the valley in which Mayrhofen is situated, is the Hintertux glacier where you’ll find guaranteed snow. Directly above Mayrhofen is the Penken ski area which has a wealth of red runs to explore. And tucked away in a small corner of the region is the quiet Eggalm ski area – a great place to escape the crowds.
Ski lessons with the Skischule Mayrhofen can be pre-booked through Inghams. Prices start at £156 per person for both adults and children.

Your ski holiday to Lapland will likely involve your first successful attempt at a black run!
The Ylläs ski school provides fantastic, supportive tuition by professionally trained and qualified ski instructors. Prices for adults begin at £150 per person, and £135 per person for children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old.
