Wild and beautiful – hence the name of one of the Tyrol’s loveliest and most unspoilt valleys. Even though Innsbruck is just under two hours away it could be a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Skiing and snowboarding in Niederau

Niederau, the first and biggest of its traditional and most charming villages, is ideal for beginner and intermediate skiers, although there are testing runs too. The resort is linked with Oberau, just 3km away, by free ski bus service. Auffach, at the end of the valley, has some more challenging slopes and is now linked with Alpbach’s ski area to form, with Niederau and Auffach, the Ski Juwel Area.

In recent seasons, the Wildschönau has won awards for ‘Best Family Ski Area’ and ‘Friendliest Staff’, as well as one for excellent piste preparation. All guests receive the FREE Wildschönau Card, which includes guided winter walks and snowshoeing, FREE entry to local museums as well as discounts for local attractions and activities.

Beginners skiing in Niederau

Niederau is excellent for beginners as the nursery slopes are directly in the centre of each village.

Intermediate skiing in Niederau

The main skiing takes place in Niederau via the Markbachjoch gondola or the Lanerköpfl chairlift. As the Wildschönau is now interlinked with Alpbach, it is ideal for intermediates with many blue and red runs to choose from.

Advanced skiing in Niederau

Along with four exciting black runs and a couple of mogul fields in the valley, most areas offer several off-piste routes for the adventurous skier.

Snowboarding in Niederau

The wide open, easy slopes are suitable for beginners and intermediates. More experienced boarders will enjoy the three funparks (whole area). The 'Race n Boarder' Arena in Niederau has a permenant race track and offers professional training.

Things To Do

Dragon winter night

Taking place every Wednesday from 27/12/23 till 28/02/24 from 19:00 till 22:00 in Drachental Family Park in Oberau. Dragon winter night offers live music, musical performances, ice disco, night roller-coaster and ski demo (only 17/01 and 15/02).

There will be a shuttle bus between Auffach, Niederau and Oberau to help guests to get to the show.

Tobogganing

Tobogganing is available in nearby Oberau daily for €5.50-€8.50 per person. On Wednesday and Thursday guests can enjoy tobogganing in the evening.

Museums

The local museum is open every Wed from 12-7pm from the 23rd Dec. Cost approx: €3.80/€5.60 per person

The Art Gallery in Niederau is open daily from 5-6.30pm

Resort buses

The night bus (Nightliner) operates Friday and Saturday from 8pm – 3am which is free with guest card and travels between Niederau and Oberau to Auffach*

Ski school might be closed on Christmas Day & New Year’s Day. 

Levels of tuition:

  • Beginner = never skied before
  • Level 1 = advanced beginner; can control speed, snowplough and change direction on gentle slopes 
  • Level 2 = low intermediate, snowplough turns and start to ski parallel
  • Level 3 = Good intermediate, Parallel turns 
  • Advanced = Fully confident on all slopes, looking to improve technique
