Beginner skiing in Chamonix

There are six nursery areas in Chamonix, as well as a number of green and blues to progress on. Les Planards in the centre of Chamonix has two drag lifts and a gentle green run to practise. Once you have gained your confidence, head up the two seater chairlift to access a slightly steeper blue and red run for further progression.

For the beginners and those who need to get their ski legs back, Le Tour is a great area as you have easy green slopes at the bottom of the gondola. Once you feel more comfortable take the gondola to some easy blue and red slopes which aren't to steep. This area is perfectly south facing so you can enjoy the winter sun and enjoy the beautiful surrounding scenery.

Brevent is also a nice area to start in and with a lovely view of the Mont Blanc and south facing. From the Brevent area it is easy to link up to the Flegere area too.

Intermediate skiing in Chamonix

Intermediate skiers can enjoy the sunny slopes of Le Tour, where there is a mix of blue and red runs. Make sure to have your camera ready as there are beautiful views of the valley. Les Houches has a number of tree-lined runs with gentle slopes and plenty of Alpine restaurants.

Les Grands Montets area has mainly red and black slopes, the highest skiable mountain in the valley and is best for confident intermediates with some of the most steep and challenging pistes in the area.

Advanced skiing in Chamonix

Chamonix is known for its long, steep and challenging slopes, particularly in the Grands Montets area. You have the choice of steep pisted runs, marked but un-pisted black runs and endless moguls. If your legs aren't burning, there is also some fantastic routes in Les Houches including the famous Kanadahar run, a challenging World Cup run.

The renowened Vallée Blanche is a must do for advanced skiers, with 23km of varying snow conditions, this off piste run really does test your skills. This course is for people who are comfortable on the slopes and want to experience off piste skiing. An instructor will discuss techniques to adapt your skills to all kinds of snow conditions (13 years + only).

Snowboarding in Chamonix

There are quite a lot of drag lifts in the beginner areas around Chamonix which isn't the easiest for first time snowboarders to navigate. If you are not a complete beginner, there are some lovely blue runs in Flégère which are served by chairlifts instead.

For the intermediates and experts, enjoy carving the blue and red pistes in Le Tour or the steeper terrain in the Brévent-Flégère area.

Advanced snowboarders should head to the Vallée Blanche on a good snow day for 23km of varying snow conditions. Take the Petit Envers du Plan route to avoid the flat sections at the top. This course is for people who are comfortable on the slopes and want to experience off piste skiing. An instructor will discuss techniques to adapt your skills to all kinds of snow conditions (13 years + only).

If theres fresh snow, head to La Flégère for some easily accessible off piste, take the Index chairlift to access Combe Lachenal.

Things To Do

Restaurants, food and drink

There are plenty of restaurants in Chamonix to chose from morning, noon and night. Do as the Europeans do and have a pastry and coffee for breakfast at one of the cafes dotted around the resort or head to the Bluebird café to fuel up for the day, and enjoy the vast breakfast offering including breakfast sandwiches or English breakfast.

Stop for lunch at one of the many on piste restaurants often serving traditional Savoyard dishes such as fondue or raclette. Make sure to keep an eye out for the 'plat du jour' (plate of the day) which is usually made up of local produce and is reasonably priced. You can also find a number of snack shacks and take away spots on the mountain too, if you are in a hurry to explore the slopes.

Down in the town there is a selection of restaurants and takeaways to choose from. La Calèche is a cosy Savoyard restaurant in the centre of Chamonix, with its cosy warm ambiance and antiques from days past you can enjoy specialities from the region in this magnificent restaurant. Being a short distance from the Italian border, naturally there is some incredible Italian spots, head to Casa Valerio for authentic Italian dishes popular with locals and tourists alike.
