Val d'Isere combines with Tignes to form the fantastic Tignes-Val d'Isére Ski Area offering endless excitement to suit all tastes and abilities. The resort is composed of La Daille, Val d'Isere centre and Le Fornet, all linked by a free bus service. Val is renowned for its nightlife, which ranges from lively clubs to cosy creperies and traditional restaurants.

Skiing and snowboarding in Val d'Isere

The ski area in Val d'Isere is so varied that no matter you experience, you'll have plenty on offer to keep you entertained for a week in the mountains. Le Fornet is a quieter part of Val d'Isere and offers some easy and often empty pistes that are usually covered with good snow - glacier skiing here goes to 3,456 metres. Beginners will find 2 free slopes located in the centre of the village, perfect for confidence building and mastering your turns before hitting the larger ski area.

Boarders are in luck too as Val d'Isere is also home to an impressive terrain park that is well worth a visit as it's perfect for practising and showing off your tricks. Val d'Isere is known for it's off piste skiing and snowboarding too with Le Fornet having some of the best, easily accessible off piste tracks across resort so you're really spoilt for choice staying here.

Where to stay in Val d'Isere

Val d'Isere is a true mountain village that taps into it's alpine roots with traditional stone, wood and lauze buildings dotted across the resort. We offer a range of 3-5 star hotels, modern residences and chalets all located within a short walk of the ski area and ski lifts. Many of our properties include spa and wellness facilities with your stay and we also have accommodations that are well suited for larger groups - whether that be families or friends. If you would like to stay in the heart of resort, you're in luck as the majority of our properties are located in the centre of Val d'Isere, but we also have hotels and chalets that are located a short yet enjoyable walk away for those of you who would prefer some peace and quiet.

Bars and restaurants in Val d'Isere

Val d'Isere has a wide range of restaurants for all tastes and budgets, whether you're feeling breakfast or dinner with a view. Across resort you'll find many restaurants that offer traditional French cuisine so there'll be plenty of opportunity to try out the local food. Why not treat yourself and eat in style at a Michelin star restaurant? 'La Table de l'Ours' provides fine dining and tasteful, rich food ranging from Savoie snails and spinach to venison with pine-smoked carrots. There are also Pizzerias, child friendly restaurants and many places serve dishes for different dietary requirements so there really is something for everyone.

Val d'Isere wouldn't be the same without it's highly rated après ski scene. The resort is home to La Folie Douce, the most famous mountain club of the Alps that attracts crowds of people year after year - a stop here is the only acceptable way to end the day with a pint and a boogie before skiing or snowboarding your way back down to the village.

From here it is just a short walk to your choice of the Solaise Express lift for the Solaise / Le Fornet side of the ski area, or the Olympique gondola if you want to ski across towards Tignes. Beginners skiing in Val d'Isère

A few nursery slopes in the resort, served by free lifts, are complemented by a new high-altitude sector for beginners at the top of the new Solaise lift. These nursery slopes are served by three covered magic carpet lifts. The area is designed especially for children from 3 to 10 years old. The four areas encourage children to try their hand at snow sports, whilst having fun at the same time.

Intermediate skiing in Val d'Isère

Intermediate skiing in Val d'Isere has practically unlimited possibilities and there are some exhilarating runs from Bellevarde down to La Daille or you can cruise down the Iseran valley as far as Le Fornet. Most of the relaxing blue runs are at a high altitude meaning you'll have a good chance of fresh powder throughout the whole season. If you're more on the experienced side and would like a challenge, the red runs and descent into the valley are a great choice and we'd recommend hitting these early in the day before the slopes get too busy.

Advanced skiing and off piste in Val d'Isère

The famous 'Face' piste - the men's Olympic downhill - is a must, as are some of the resort's unrivalled off-piste, especially on the Le Fornet side. Take a local qualified guide and explore the glorious bowls and challenging couloirs of this huge area. Or use a guide to go ski touring to discover the untracked areas. Each day at 2pm on the Front de neige you can practise with transceivers and probes to discover 'victims' with the help of an expert.

The Bellevarde side of the mountain is where most of Val d'Iseres off piste trails are and has wide open terrain for you to enjoy. The Lost Valley is a slightly narrower track and will involve navigating your way between rocks and trees - it's also known as one of the most beautiful runs in resort! But if you're looking for some powder practice we'd recommend heading over to La Daille where there is extensive off piste tracks as well as moguls and the ungroomed 'naturide' paths for varied terrain.

Snowboarding in Val d'Isere

A boarders' paradise: very few drag lifts and lots of off-piste. The world-class snowpark has 30 kickers and obstacles for beginners to advanced. It is located on Bellevarde beside the slalom course and is easily reached from the top of the Olympique gondola or the Funival funicular from La Daille. There are also two natural ski/boardercross courses on Bellevarde and another track on Solaise for racers to pit their skills against each other in a safe but fun environment.

Cross country skiing in Val d'Isere

Val d'Isere has a total of 21 kilometres of tracks for cross country skiing split over 1 green slope, 4 blue slopes and 2 red slopes. The cross country tracks are free to use and are marked on the Tignes-Val d'Isere piste map. One of our favourite trails is the Ouillette lake which is located at the top of the Solaise cable car towards the Madeleine chairlift on the right hand side.

Things to do in Val d'Isere

Restaurants, food and drink

Throughout resort there are plenty of restaurants serving traditional French cuisine as well as a few pizzerias and Italian restaurants. There is also a Michelin star restaurant and Michelin guide restaurants if you feel like fancying up your evening meal one night of your holiday. During the day, you'll also find plenty of places to pit stop and refuel with a light lunch and a coffee, with a range of cafes and bakeries serving a selection of cakes, sandwiches and pastries.

Val d'Isere is a great location for families as France is very relaxed with the idea of bringing children to restaurants so the majority of places to eat in Val d'Isere are family friendly. This doesn't mean that everywhere will have dedicated children's menus as French families usually eat together at the same times, but we can assure you that they'll be happy to accommodate your requests as best they can.

Après, bars, clubs and nightlife

It's true that Val d'Isere wouldn't be the resort it is today without a good dose of après ski to end your active day. If you're an après veteran it'll be no doubt you'll recognise this name - La Folie Douce - the biggest mountain club across the alps. What better way to party than dancing on the table in snow gear alongside your friends all whilst listening to a DJ and professional singers/dancers. The club is located half way down the OK piste on the way to La Daille, so there is still opportunities to ski or snowboard back to resort after a beer or two; but if you'd prefer to party a bit harder you can always take the gondola back down to the village.

If you want to continue the party into the early hours of the morning you're in luck as Val d'Isere also has several bars and clubs that are open until late. Dick's Tea Bar is a great option for late night partying with great resident DJs as well as some surprise guest appearances.

Spas and relaxation

Centre Aquasportif, the local sports centre in Val d'Isere, has five main areas available including the beach world, the wellness zone, the sports world, the wellbeing world and the lounge area and these areas are dedicated to sport, relaxation and your well-being. You can also keep yourself entertained with a variety of activities from climbing, swimming, squash and basketball - they even have their own virtual golf simulator! You can also treat yourself and book a local massage or beauty treatment during your stay for ultimate relaxation.

Most of the accommodation we offer also provide access to spa and wellness facilities such as hot tubs with views of the peaks, or private saunas that are perfect after a day skiing.

Shopping

Val d'Isere is home to a diverse range of shops. It's no surprise that across resort you'll find high-spec sports shop selling ski and snowboarding equipment as well as some of the top sports clothing brands like Burton, The North Face and Salomon. Don't worry, Val d'Isere also has a range of high fashion shops for those of you looking to expand your everyday wardrobe, stretching as far as jewellery, beauty and perfume shops. Take a slice of France home with you thanks to the regional food and drink shops that are dotted around the village, selling local wines, cheeses, biscuits and sweet treats. You'll also find a range of gift and souvenir shops, so whether you want a little something for yourself, or need a present for a special occasion, Val d'Isere has you covered.

Festivals and events

During Christmas week, there are a large variety of festivities for everyone in the family to enjoy. Giant snow sculptures and snow scenes will be found throughout the resort and a number of live shows will be played on stage at the 'Olympique Avenue'. On Christmas Eve, explore the slopes to find Father Christmas before he delivers his presents - this is a great opportunity to give him your Christmas list! In the evening, Father Christmas, his elves and giant toys will be arriving in the village and on Christmas Day, the French National Ski School Christmas show will celebrate with a torchlight descent in the evening. And finally, celebrate with the family on New Year's Eve watching the fireworks, the ski school freestyle show and torchlight descent down the mountain.

Ice skating

Located in the heart of the village, there is an artificial ice skating rink - the Patinoire de Val d'Isere - and is great fun for all the family. It is open all winter 7 days a week, weather dependant of course, and there is a small refreshment chalet located on site for snacks and hot drinks to warm you up.

Ice driving and karting

Val d'Isere has one driving school offering training courses supervised by professionals for ice driving. They have one car and one motorcycle track as well as a ice karting track and driving simulator that replicates the real sensations felt when driving on a real race car track. Ice driving improves you reflexes, helps you respond to risks and sets out to improve your driving in general. If you don't want to drive, you can also experience drifting on the ice at speed as a passenger with a professional race driver who all have national certificates of motor sports.

Helicopter rides

If you'd like to have some time off the slopes but still explore Val d'Isere and the surrounding ski area and resorts, helicopter rides are the perfect way to do that. Take a tour of the peaks, with some unforgettable views of the Tignes and Val d'Isere ski area, the Escape Killy, the Three Valleys ski area and Mont Blanc Valley.

Para gliding

Val d'Isere is a great place to learn to fly thanks to it's many clubs and organisations in the resort whose sole purpose is to get you up in the air. Flights can be taken with a qualified instructor and it's good to know that no level of fitness is required for this activity, all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the spectacular birds-eye views.

Snowmobiling

Snowmobiles are great fun and a fab way to explore the side of the mountains the ski slopes don't touch. It's up to you to decide whether you want to be a passenger or a driver but either way you'll have opportunities to experience untouched landscapes surrounding Mont Blanc, Bellevarde summit and the Sache - and some great opportunities for photos!

Travel and Transportation

Travel Information

All our holidays include return travel to resort either by flight or train and then the transfer between the airport or railway station and Val d'Isere.

All departures are on Saturdays with stays for 7 or 14 nights except our 8 night Eurostar train package which departs Saturday and returns a week late on the Sunday.

The transfer in Val d'Isere will stop as chose as possible to your chosen accommodation. In some cases there may be a 5 minutes' walk due to the location of the property not being accessible by coach.

Travel By Air

For customers who are booking a Gatwick flight, we highly recommend that you choose the morning flight for Val d'Isere due to the traffic light system in the Tarentaise Valley. This system controls and slows down the traffic, stopping traffic sitting in dangerous places, like tunnels, where rocks can fall and to make snow clearing easier when it is snowing. This can impact your transfer time, meaning you may arrive into resort later and leaving for the airport earlier.

Transfers may be longer in peak holiday periods if there is heavy traffic or if there is bad weather conditions.

Travel by Eurostar Snow Train (8 night package)

We now have a special 8 night Eurostar Snow Train package to Val d'Isere (available for departures from 16th Dec 2023 to 27th January 2024). Please call to book this option.

This is a train that departs on the Saturday and returns 8 days later back to London on the Sunday giving you 7 days of skiing and an extra night in Bourg St Maurice before returning home included in the Eurostar Snow Train Package.
