Restaurants, food and drink

There are plenty of restaurants, both on the mountain and in the resort itself. You can find Savoyard specialities such as fondue, raclette or tartifilette, if you are cheesed out, there are also a number of fine dining French brasseries,  pizzerias and an American style diner in resort. 

A ski holiday in France is not complete without trying the famous French cheese dishes. La Laiterie is part of the 5* Hotel Altapura, so you can expect high quality dishes. All of the cheeses on their menu are carefully selected and paired together with regional wine, it is a culinary experience not to be missed.

Johns American is an American themed restaurant located in the upper part of Val Thorens, serving a range of tex-mex classics such as fajitas, burgers, salads and their famous ribs.  If you are in the Péclet region,  Les Aiguilles de Pécle is a lovely spot to stop for lunch. With wonderful views of the surrounding ski area, you have the choice of a sit down meal in the upper part of the restaurant or a self service restaurant downstairs. 

Après, bars, clubs and nightlife

Val Thorens is a lively resort and there is no shortage of places to go after a day skiing. The famous Folie Douceis situated under the Plein Sud chairlift, and has live music, DJs and dancers throughout the winter season. Once you have made your way off the mountain, Le Monde is a Dutch après bar in the centre of the resort, promising a party like no other. For the night owls, there are three nightclubs in Val Thorens. Malaysia, Klub Summit and Le Baramix. Malaysia has undergone a refurb for this winter season, new visuals, new music and a new atmosphere, the club’s entrance will also be moved to the bottom of Place Caron.

Spas and swimming

For an afternoon of relaxing head to the Le Board Sports Complex. The complex has a swimming pool with swimming lanes, massage jets and a children's area. There is also an adults only area with jacuzzis, a hammam and saunas.

Shopping

There are lots of shops selling souvenirs so you can remember your trip. There are also a couple of pharmacies selling French beauty brands, as well as sport shops with the latest seasons apparel. 

Equipment rental and sports shops are typically open until late in the day so you can maximise your time on the mountain before returning your equipment at the end of your last day.

Festivals and events 

Val Thorens has been hosting a Belgian week for a number of years.  Join the thousands of Belgian party animals and enjoy seven days of great food, drink and partying. Tickets are mandatory to enter the event. 

A Dutch week is held at the end of each winter, parties and DJ sets are held in some of the best locations in Val Thorens. There are also activities and entertainments for children such as  ski lessons and a kid's disco. You can even test the newest skis and snowboards for free. Register your interest so you don't miss out.

Festi Val Tho marks the beginning of spring and the end of winter season. Each year the music festival has live music and DJ sets in some of the best bars in resort. Admission is free.

Things to do in Val Thorens

Tobogganing

The longest toboggan run in France can be found at the Cosmojet Toboggan run, accessible via the Péclet funitel. It takes about 45 minutes to run the roughly 6 kilometres to the bottom.

Le Board Sport Centre

As well as the swimming pool and wellness facilities, the complex has a range of sports courts and a fitness area with body building facilities. There is also a soft play area for the children which includes giant trampolines, slides, rope bridges and a ball pit. Payable locally.

Snowshoeing

If you would prefer to experience the mountain by foot, there are plenty of paths to follow. The sentier de la Marine is a relatively easy walk of around 5km, starting at Chalet du Cosmojet you will be met with fantastic views across the snowy landscape.

Night skiing

Have you ever wanted to stay on the mountain after last lifts? Every Friday you can enjoy the Tête Ronde and Christine runs in Péclet sector until 6.30pm. It is free of charge for guests with a valid Val Thorens/ Orelle ski pass.

Zip lining 

Take to new heights and have a go at the La Bee zip line at the top of the Moutiere chairlift. This adrenaline filled zip line is suitable for children over the age of 14. Height restrictions apply. Pay locally.

The Tyrolienne du Bouchet is the highest zipline in Europe giving you the chance to whizz through the incredible mountain scenery. Located at the top of the Bouchet chairlift. Pay locally.

Electric mountain bike

Using the electric mountain bikes, you can easily navigate the snowy terrain. You will be able to take an exploration ride on the Montagnette path in Val Thorens with the benefit of an Evolution 2 guide. Pay and book locally.

Snake gliss

Snake Gliss (sledge train to you and me) is where sledges are tied together, led by a professional instructor and whizzing down the 45 minute descent from the top of Funitel de Péclet. 

Bowling

For a bit of evening entertainment head to the resorts bowling centre, where there are eight lanes for bowling, a pool table and a variety of games including a football table. 

Snowmobiling

Ride your own snowmobile, or with a passenger and follow your guide on a tour around the unspoilt winter landscapes around Val Thorens. Book and pay locally.
