Things to do in Vienna

Sightseeing

Vienna has some of the greatest architecture in Austria, such as the palaces of Schönbrunn, Hofburg and Belvedere. You can take insightful tours within these phenomenal buildings to see the beautiful ceiling paintings, giant chandeliers, traditional furnishings and learn about their history. Or, visit St. Stephens Cathedral, the tallest church in Austria, and the symbol of Vienna.

Vienna’s Ringstrasse

In 2015, the Ringstrasse celebrated its 150th anniversary and the circular boulevard is perfect for an afternoon stroll. At nearly five-and-a-half kilometres long, you'll pass famous monuments, statues and buildings that were built between 1860 and 1890.

Prater Giant wheel

View the city’s skyline from above as you take in the breathtaking views from the spacious and timeless pods on the Viennese giant Ferris wheel. The short 20-minute ride will whisk you to a new viewpoint of Austria's capital city, allowing you to spot its many famous landmarks like St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The overall experience lasts around two hours, ideal for a quick morning activity.

Museums

With over 100 museums, Vienna is a paradise for any keen history, geography, or art enthusiast. Vienna is home to an array of Jewish museums, such as the Sigmund Frued or Viktor Frankl Museums. One of the newest museums is the Albertina modern, a contemporary artistic hotspot.

Music and arts

Vienna is Austria’s capital of the music and arts. Visit the homes of composers ‘Waltz King’ Johann Strauss, F. Schubert and J. Haydn or enjoy their music at various concerts at the Musikverein, the Hofburg or the State Opera. The Museum of Fine Arts also displays the works of Dürer, Rembrandt and Rubens.

City Parks

When visiting the Stadpark, you must go to the Strauss monument, a golden statue of Johann Strauss. You'll have wealth of photo opportunities – not forgetting the giant flowerbed clock that lies within the gardens. Close to the Hofburg Palace is the Volksgarten park, renowned for its lovely rose garden.

Café hop

It looks like a coffee and cake are on the cards. Stop off at multiple cafés for a mini break during your day of exploring the city. There are plenty of beautiful coffee houses with spectacular interiors, or local Viennese experiences on offer in admired places like the Café Central.

Shopping

The 1st district areas of Kärntnerstrasse and Graben contain the most exclusive shops and coffee houses. Keep a look out for ‘Augarten’ porcelain, petit-point needlework and, of course, the famous Sachertorte chocolate cake. The equivalent of Oxford Street is the Mariahilferstrasse.
