Ski holidays in Grindelwald

Traditional village with fabulous skiing at the foot of the mighty Eiger

  • Ski from an altitude of 2,970 metres in the Jungfrau Ski Region
  • 211 kilometres of pistes across the whole ski area
  • 27 blue, 36 red and 19 black runs
  • Excellent non-ski activities including winter walking and sledging

Grindelwald is Mecca for fans of all winter pursuits, with immaculately groomed pistes, prepared hiking paths, sled runs and even zip lines included in the area pass - thrill seekers will love the First Flyer and Glider zip lines. The village is in a pretty spectacular location in the valley, beneath the towering north face of the Eiger, surrounded by mountains. Access to the large ski area of the Jungfrau region couldn't be easer using the excellent network of mountain trains, buses and cable-cars. You'll be carving your way around the three linked ski areas in no time: Grindelwald-First, Grindelwald-Wengen and Mürren-Schilthorn. You can even tackle the challenging Lauberhorn race run, have lunch in Wengen, and still be home in time for tea.

Skiing and Snowboarding in Grindelwald

Investments into the modern lift network has made getting around even easier from the Grindelwald Terminal station. The Eiger Express gets you to the glacier in record time and links up to the railway to take you up to the Jungfrau - Top of Europe (payable locally). While the Männlichen gondola leads to a network of some of the longest cruisy runs in the region and access to the Kleine Scheidegg and Wengen ski area areas. We'd still recommend travelling the more traditional way on the scenic cog railway, especially if you're heading for some high altitude skiing from the Schiltorn in Mürren.

Development on the brand new Schilthorn cable car will be taking place over the winter 2024/25 season, limiting access to the top of the Piz Gloria/ Schilthorn mountain. The cable car will terminate at Birg, however there is still plenty of skiing in the local Murren area.

Things To Do

Restaurants

If you fancy fondue, burgers, pizza or pasta, you'll be sure to find something to meet your taste. Head to Café 3692 for a pastry or two, make your way to the Widderfeldhutte the highest hut on First for lunch and enjoy the local delicacies in resort for dinner.

Après, bars and nightlife

Whilst Switzerland is not renowned for its après scene, there are plenty of cosy mountain huts dotted around to enjoy a drink. In the resort itself there are a number of bars to relax after a day on the slopes. The Avocado Bar is a lively after skiing bar - throughout the winter season there is often a DJ or live music creating a great atmosphere.

Shopping

There are lots of shops selling souvenirs and postcards so you can remember your holiday in the Jungfrau. There are also plenty of supermarkets dotted around Grindelwald for groceries and essentials.

Grindelwald Sportzentrum

The Sportzentrum will keep you occupied when the snow is just too heavy to ski. Give your ski legs a break and go for a swim at the Sportzentrum. There is a swimming pool, a baby pool, spring board, waterslide and a wellness area with a range of facilities. Alternatively have a go at the indoor rope park where there are a number of challenges to undertake.  Guest with a hotel guest card can receive discounted entry to the sports centre.

Ice skating & curling

The artificial ice rink in Grindelwald is open throughout the winter season, also located at the Sportzentrum and is a great activity for all the family. Alternately compete in a game of curling and test your ability to hit the target.

Tobogganing

Swap your skis or board for a toboggan and head down the longest sledding run in the world -Big Pintenfritz . The run is only accessible by foot, catch the gondola up to First,  follow the signposts to Bachalpsee and further up to the Faulhorn on this 2.5hr long walk, to be rewarded with a 15km descent into the valley.

If you don't fancy hiking head up the Männlichen cableway where you can sledge down to the village if the snow conditions are good enough.

Walking

There is a superb network of winter walking trails with wonderful views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains. Catch the gondola up to First and follow the trail to the Gummihütte, the trail rolls along gently until reaching Lake Bachalp, where you will be met with impressive views of the Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn.

First Flyer & Glider

The ‘First Flyer’ is a unique activity which is basically a giant 800 metre zip wire spanning from First to Schreckfeld. Whizz down at speeds reaching 84 kilometres per hour – making for an exhilarating and scenic ride.

Sightseeing

There are excellent train links to the surrounding areas including Lauterbrunnen, The Jungfraujoch 'Top of Europe' and Thun for a day of sightseeing off the slopes.
