If you're looking to get away as a family or small group the Residence Villa Maria is a great choice, just outside Desenzano. The self-catered apartments are in the peaceful setting of lush private parkland, close to Lake Garda's waterfront - so they're ideal if you like the idea of your own private space to relax away from it all. The complex is made up of an elegant Liberty style villa, which is the main hotel building, and 24 separate villa apartments surrounded by spacious gardens.

There's lots to keep you entertained here. The large pool is surrounded by loungers and parasols, and the pool bar is nearby - so while the kids are splashing about in the water you could be chilling out with a refreshing drink in hand. While its cooler in the morning, why not have a few games of tennis? The court's free for guests to use. You can also hire bikes locally - it's a great way to explore the area. It's about 30 minutes' walk to the centre of Desenzano, so even less if you cycle. It's a nice route into town as it's mostly along the lakeside and if you keep going you'll reach the pretty peninsula of Sirmione.

The apartments are well equipped with two separate bedrooms and a living room and kitchen area. They kitchen has everything you need to rustle up some tasty food. The supermarket's just across the road so you can stock up no problem. Self-catering gives you ultimate flexibility. Wake up and enjoy your breakfast outside on your own private patio and later on you can choose whether you want to eat in or check out some of the local cafes and restaurants.

Transfer time: approx. 45 mins by coach from Verona airport.

Desenzano

Desenzano combines a lakeside setting with a lively atmosphere. The centre's thriving with bars, cafés, pizzerias and an impressive pedestrianised shopping area. Mingle with the locals as you walk around the narrow streets, stopping to browse the unique items found in some of the family-run boutiques. Stroll a bit further and head uphill to the medieval castle that overlooks the town – you’ll get some of the best views of the lake from up here.

If you want to get some sun, we recommend heading to one of Desenzano’s three public beaches. There's sun loungers and parasols to rent as well as lake-view cafés where you can stop for a drink. The lakeside comes alive in the summer evenings with trendy bars welcoming tourists and locals.

One of the best things about Desenzano is how easy it is to get out and explore. The ferries leave regularly so popular towns like Garda, Peschiera and Sirmione are easy to get to. The town's station has regular trains to both Verona and Venice, which are perfect for day trips. But if you’ve already been or fancy escaping the crowds, we recommend heading to Padua. It’s a small, energetic city that doubles as a museum with the Basilica of St. Anthony’s extraordinary frescoes and a jumble of architecture from Gothic to Renaissance.
