Hotel Ville Montefiori is made up of four Italian villas. It's in the most peaceful location on a hill above the lake, and the gardens are perfectly landscaped with sculptures dotted around them. It feels like you've come to a little hideaway. It's decorated in an ornate Italian style with lots of gold gilding, chandeliers and rich colours.

The hotel has great spa facilities with a sauna, steam room and whirlpool, as well as two swimming pools, which are the place to be when you're not out discovering Gardone. We'd recommend walking along to Gardone Sopra and checking out the Vittoriale Museum and gardens. You're only a 12 minute walk away from this historic town and all the restaurants, cafes and bars it has to offer. In the evening come back and have a drink on the terrace, it has a fantastic panoramic view of the lake.

What to see on a Gardone Riviera holiday

This resort is perfect if you enjoy gardens. The Heller Botanical Gardens are close by and they have over 2,000 species of tropical plants and flowers. It’s a fantastic day out, you can easily spend hours wandering through the grounds. Make sure you visit other resorts on the lake too. There's regular ferries from her and Bardolino and Garda are just a short hop across the water.

The Heller Botanical Gardens are a real gem for nature lovers. Designed by the internationally renowned artist, Andre Heller, the gardens are a showcase of pioneering ideas on landscape design and how to integrate are into the setting.

We love getting on a ferry and exploring as many towns as we can. Bardolino and Garda are just across the lake and are a great day out. Isola del Garda is the biggest island on Lake Garda – head here to discover the history of the Roman settlers and wander round the Franciscan monastery.

There’s plenty to do near Gardone itself, too. The Salò Duomo was built in 1450 and you can go and have a look inside. We recommend going to Il Vittoriale - a glamorous villa that overlooks the lake. It’s famous for being the home of the artist, writer and political activist Gabriele d’Annunzio. Today it’s a wonderful complex of buildings, gardens, museums and stunning statues.

Food & drink

This lovely little corner of Lake Garda is a haven for wine lovers. With the Bardolino wine festival happening on the other side of the lake and many of the delicious wines coming from the immediate area, it would be a mistake to leave without sitting on the lakeside promenade with a glass or two.

The food here is pretty great too – you’ll be spoilt for choice with the number of restaurants. You can expect fresh ingredients almost everywhere. Try the local fish or homemade pastas. We love Emiliano’s - it’s great for a filling lunch.

Venice Classic from £74 per person (full day)

Venice is not to be missed! This excursion allows you to explore the city with a guide and at your own pace. You’ll arrive by coach and grab a water taxi to the centre. You’ll also have the option to add on a gondola ride (payable locally). There’s plenty of time to take in sights of the Basilica, Doge's Palace, St Mark's square and the Rialto bridge  – this is the perfect introduction to one of Italy's most magical cities.

Verona from £49 per person (full day)

Verona is one of Italy’s most charming little cities. This day trip dips into the romance of the medieval city, reliving the scenes from Romeo and Juliet while wandering around through the cobbled streets and past ancient buildings. The impressive 2,000-year-old Roman arena is one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world and is currently home to the Verona Opera, and the marble paved shopping street of Via Mazzini leads you to the stunning Piazza Delle Erbe.
