Milky Way Ski Area

Extensive skiing over five peaks and six resorts on the France-Italy border

Skiing in the Milky Way is excellent if you're on the more experienced side, with wonderful long runs and really impressive views from the slopes on Mount Motta at 2823m, with wide open spaces above the tree-line as well as picturesque wooded runs below. If it's your first time on the slopes don't worry, there are many opportunities for beginners with nursery slopes placed close to the villages of each resort - families are best placed in Montgenvre due to it's money saving offers and quiet atmospheres.

Ski holidays in the Milky Way ski area

The long chain of linked resorts, with 400 kilometres of pistes, gives skiers and boarders a wonderful opportunity to travel from resort to resort, ending up crossing the border of France and Italy. En route you’ll pass through the Olympic hub of Sestriere-Cesana-Sansicario which you’ll no doubt want to explore before moving on to Claviere and finally into the French end of the system - before continuing towards Montgenèvre in France, try stopping at Claviere for lunch before you cross the border. Sestriere at 2035m, is the highest resort in the Milky Way and is arguably Europe’s first purpose-built ski resort, developed specifically for winter sports by Fiat’s Giovanni Agnelli in the 1930s. Sauze d'Oulx, with its charmingly rustic old mountain village centre, has a good variety of slopes, some attractively gladed, and an equally eclectic choice of pubs, bars and restaurants: the après-ski here is not dull. Between these six resorts, and two countries, you are truly spoilt for choice!

What We Say
  • Snowboarders are well catered for in the Milky Way with a fantastic snow park in Sestriere as well as mini parks in each of the remaining resorts.

  • If you're feeling daring enough, we'd recommend heading over to Le Chalvet for the best off piste territory in the Milky Way.

  • Le Trio in Montgenevre is a fantastic restaurant if you feel like eating out and serves an array of traditional, French cuisine.
