  • With Christmas just around the corner, ski tour holiday company Inghams shares its top picks for the most festive resorts this year; Avoriaz in France, Zell am See and Mayrhofen in Austria and Levi in Lapland. From roasting chestnuts on the open fire and exploring local Christmas markets to meeting Father Christmas and his elves, these four resorts are sure to make their guests festive ski holiday a magical and unforgettable experience.

    Avoriaz, France
This year, the week leading up to Christmas in the French ski resort of Avoriaz offers a magical festival of fire lanterns ascending into the night sky, fireworks erupting and an ice carving competition. Roasted chestnuts are served on the streets while carol singing can be heard throughout the town as well as spectacular festive performances take place at the mountain base stations. One of the highlights of the festive period is the arrival of Father Christmas who rides his sleigh into town in a colourful procession. The resort’s ski instructors also join in with the celebrations by ascending the mountain holding fire-lit torches above their heads!

For those wishing to experience the magic of Avoriaz this Christmas, Inghams is offering seven nights on a chalet board basis at the 3.5 diamond Chalet Fleurie from £599 per person, a saving of £360 per person. Price includes return flights from London Gatwick to Geneva with resort transfers and a Christmas turkey dinner on Christmas Day which includes mince pies, a pre-dinner glass of Champagne, Christmas pudding and a visit from Santa if there are children aged eight and below in the party, departing on 19th December 2015. Lake Zell is spectacularly lit up with lights and the popular and thriving Magical Christmas Market in the town centre offers plenty of hand-made gifts and trinkets for visitors to take home as well as toys, mulled wine, freshly baked sweets and roasted nuts. Zell am See has made sure to keep its Christmas traditions alive and this year sees the return of the Krampus Procession and Christmas Tree Diving. The Krampus Procession involves an actor dressed as a spooky goblin who, according to folklore, punishes badly behaved children and only Father Christmas can save them. Another tradition, Christmas Tree Diving, entails an entire Christmas tree that is sunken 15 metres into Lake Zell and divers of the Water Rescue Association put on a big performance and display of diving to bring it back up again.

For visitors keen to experience the festivities of Zell am See, Inghams is offering seven nights on a half board basis at the four-star Hotel Zum Hirschen from £699 per person, a saving of £320. Price includes return flights from Manchester to Salzburg with resort transfers and a special Christmas Gala Dinner included on Christmas Day with live music, departing on 19th December 2015. Visitors can follow a themed trail that will lead them through the romantic Scheulingwald Forest to the Forest Festival Area. Each Friday and every weekend from 4th December until Christmas Day, the forest transforms into a magical winter wonderland with carol singing, brass band music and a local choir. One of the highlights of the Forest Festival Area is the Christkindl procession, Christkindl is a small angle-like child, a similar symbol to Father Christmas in the UK. During the run up to Christmas, visitors have the chance to meet Father Christmas’ elves, Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer and even Father Christmas himself.
