Walking holidays in The Wildschonau Valley
Tucked away in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps, the Wildschönau Valley is one of Austria's best-kept summer secrets. With its peaceful villages, flower-filled meadows, and gently rolling peaks, it’s a haven for walkers seeking fresh air, mountain views, and a slower pace of life. Whether you're after panoramic ridge hikes, forest trails, or easy family strolls, this quiet corner of Austria offers a wonderfully unhurried take on alpine adventure.

The Wildschönau is made up of four pretty villages, Niederau, Oberau, Auffach and Thierbach, each connected by a network of well-marked walking routes. You'll find over 300 kilometres of trails to explore, ranging from valley-floor rambles to more challenging climbs up to the Gratlspitz or along to the Schönanger Alm. Many routes start right from the village centres, so you can wander straight into the hills. And with plenty of rest stops and mountain huts along the way, there’s no need to rush.
Unlike some of Austria’s better-known resorts, the Wildschönau has a quiet, authentic charm. Walk through pine forests, across sun-dappled pastures, and up to ridgelines where the views stretch across the Inn Valley and beyond. The area’s relative stillness means you’re more likely to hear cowbells and birdsong than crowds - perfect if you’re after a more restorative kind of walking holiday.
Walking in the Wildschönau isn’t just about the views - it’s also a chance to connect with the region’s rural traditions. You'll pass working farms, centuries-old chapels, and family-run huts serving hearty Tyrolean dishes made with local produce. Try a slice of Apfelstrudel on a sunny terrace or sample the valley’s famous Krautinger schnapps, made only here from local turnips!
