Grand Hotel Cadenabbia is one of the oldest and finest hotels in the area. There's so much history here and lots of notable guests have stayed in the past, including Queen Victoria. It used to be a palace and the hotel has retained much of its original design including the Edwardian lake-facing façade.

It's located on the lakefront of Cadenabbia, just 400 meters from the ferry port. We recommend heading across the lake to Bellagio for a great day out. Villa Carlotta is just down the road from the hotel and it's absolutely stunning. You can easily spend the whole day walking around the magnificent botanical park. Make sure you visit the museum too - there's lots of exhibits across two floors.

Cadenabbia is a quiet resort so it's perfect if you're looking for a more relaxed holiday. Our favourite spot to chill out is the roof terrace, especially at sunset. At the back of the hotel you also have an outdoor pool in a nice little secluded location, surrounded by gardens and overlooked by the Grignetta Mountians.

The hotel’s restaurant has a lake view terrace and there's live music throughout the week between 9pm and 11pm including jazz bands and string quartets. The rooms here are traditional in style and many have panoramic views over Lake Como.

Transfer time: approx. 2 hours by coach from Milan Malpensa airport.

In a sheltered lakeside position on the western shores of Lake Como, Cadenabbia is a super spot for a lakes and mountain holiday - with Mount Crocione behind you, you can look across the lake for wonderful views of the headland village of Bellagio and the Dolomite mountain range beyond. It has been a popular health resort with the British since Victorian times – indeed Queen Victoria herself chose to holiday in Cadenabbia and one of the country’s first Anglican churches was built here in 1891. Other notable heads of state who have sojourned here including Nicholas II, Kaiser Guglielmo II and Pope Pio XI; Mary Shelley wrote about Cadenabbia as long ago as 1844, and a few years later Guiseppe Verdi composed Traviata in the peace and quiet of Villa Ricordo (Villa Margherita). Between the 17th and 19th centuries many other villas were built here and nearby including Villa Collina, Villa Giuseppina and Villa Norella.

Things to Do

With glorious lakes and mountain scenery around you it’s tempting to laze around and do very little, but if you feel energetic and fancy exploring there is a delightful (if steep) walk up to the 16th century church of San Martino. There is nearby Griante to explore, the famous Villa Carlotta botanical gardens are on the way to nearby Tremezzo and, of course, everyone on a holiday to Lake Como is bound to take a boat trip - or three!

  • 18 hole golf course at Menaggio
  • Hiking around Monte Grona (above Menaggio)
  • Mountain biking trails around lake
  • Trips to well-known Villas of Balbianello (Lenno), Carlotta (Tremezzo) and Monastero (Varenna)
  • Como Town - 30 minutes away by hydrofoil
