From the lake, the Grand Hotel Menaggio stands superior in its surrounding. The large building with the pretty wooden shutters and all the plants throughout the garden make this an inviting property, one of the many reasons so many guests return each year. Situated a short 300 metre walk from the centre of town and with a ferry port close by, it makes for a wonderful base for those looking to explore the various resorts on the lake. Local ferries can take you to Varenna and Bellagio and the larger ferries down to Como town itself.

Guest rooms at the hotel are simplistic in their design yet comfortable with modern amenities and elegant, traditional touches. Upgraded rooms have a tremendous lake side view which is the perfect place to look out to every morning when you wake. Our favourite spot on the grounds is the gardens in which the Grand Hotel Menaggio is set, an attraction in their own right with cypress trees, Michoacan pine and dwarf palms encompassing a large heated outdoor pool. The gardens offer sun loungers and parasols that lead down to the water’s edge. The perfect place to get lost in a book and let your mind wonder.

There are two restaurants within the hotel including the elegant Sala Clio that overlooks the lake and garden and serves dishes such as grilled octopus linguine and queen scallops. For a more relaxed experience, La Veranda situated within the gardens boasts a fabulous cocktail menu with light bites such as antipasti sharing boards during the summer months.

Halfway along the western shores of Lake Como, a holiday in Menaggio offers a very popular Italian Lakes getaway. Established by the Romans as a strategic settlement on the Via Regina road, it was fortified in medieval times with walls, towers and castles and again in the Great War and WWII. Remains from all these periods can be seen around town. The fascinating upper town has narrow medieval alleys, steps and frescos, whilst lower down you will find 19th century alpine style buildings, the harbour and a picturesque lakeside promenade lined with shady trees, flowers and well-kept villas.
