Castello di Baccaresca is the ideal starting point to get to know the Umbrian countryside. Set in a rural location surrounded by nature, around a 30-minute drive from Gubbio. As you'll have already noticed, the hotel was previously a castle. It's a pretty impressive sight as you first approach, driving along the winding path amongst the trees, until it appears ahead on the hilltop.

The gardens surrounding the castle building are vast - we loved taking evening strolls through them, just before the sun goes down. You'll find the pool out here. There's lots of comfy sun loungers where you can relax while you enjoy the views across the Umbrian Valley. Inside the renovated building you can still feel the history of the place - it's elegant and characterful, with antiques and paintings to admire as you wander through. The rooms are all unique - in some you can still see the original features of the castle.

If you're coming to Umbria to try the delicious food and local wines, then this is the place for you. The restaurant serves the best of Umbrian cuisine - we can't stop thinking about the gnocchi with gorgonzola and walnuts we had there. When it comes to the wine, they have a great selection and will even organise a tasting session for you if you like.

A real highlight of the hotel though, is the wellness Centre that’s equipped with a steam room Finnish sauna, whirlpool and treatment rooms - it's the perfect place to relax (reservations are recommended).

Car hire is recommended for this hotel. Castello di Baccaresca is approx. 2 hours 30 mins from Rome Airport or 3 hours from Pisa Airport.

A holiday to Umbria is your chance to slow down and really experience la dolce vita. This central region is the green heart of Italy, so expect working villages that live life at a peaceful pace.

In fact, even the cities take things easy. Assisi balances on a hilltop covered in churches, including the gothic Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi. The National Gallery of Umbria idles in Perugia’s Palazzo dei Priori. And the medieval town of Gubbio serves up sweeping views of the Apennines from its cable car.

Wherever you decide to stay in Umbria, great wine (try a glass or two of Montefalco) and hearty home-cooked food (think truffles, porcetta and pecorino) are guaranteed.

The outdoor pool is surrounded by comfy sun loungers and parasols - so you can easily spend the day relaxing out here. When the sun goes down its the perfect place for an aperitif with a view.
