Explore Switzerland's diverse scenery with two contrasting regions easily connected by train

Combining contrasting regions of Lake Geneva in south-western Switzerland, and the Bernese Oberland, you'll discover some of the most beautiful landscapes in Switzerland on this popular multi-centre holiday.

December 2022 was an important month in the history of this train line, with the launch of the GoldenPass Express. This train connects two equally popular regions. Both offering trips around the lakes or hikes into surrounding mountains. You can enjoy new carriages with panoramic windows and comfortable seating between Montreux and  Interlaken  without changing train at Zweisimmen. Two tracks meet here and an ingenious and innovative technical development has modified the gauge of the bogies and the height of the carriages in relation to the platform as they pass through Zweisimmen station. This means you stay on board and travel directly between your two destinations.

Your multi-centre holiday options:

    • Flexible durations in each destination
    • Travel and change destination on a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday

Your holiday includes:

    • Return flights or trains from the UK
    • 2nd class train transfers from the airport to your hotel in Montreux, from your hotel in Montreux to your hotel in Interlaken and from your hotel in Interlaken to the airport (some changes of trains required, 1st class upgrade possible at extra cost)
    • Option to include travel on the Golden Pass Panoramic Train between Montreux and Interlaken with seat reservation* (if you prefer, you can opt not to include travel on the Golden Pass Train, in which case your transfer will be by standard train and may require a change of trains along the route)
    • Swiss Half Fare Card - worth over £100 – included as part of your rail tickets
    • Accommodation in your chosen hotel in each destination
    • Unlimited use of local buses in Montreux and Interlaken with local guest cards (provided by your hotels)

*Please note that we will organise seat reservations for you on the Golden Pass Express but while we will try our very best to arrange seats together, due to huge demand on the services, we can’t guarantee this.

Experience a little bit of everything Swiss in Montreux and visit the UNESCO Lavaux Terraces

Montreux is well placed for exploring the Lake Geneva region - perhaps take a morning stroll along the flower-lined promenade and stop at one of the many lakeside cafés for lunch. Visit to the historic Château de Chillon castle or head high up to the Rochers de Naye for spectacular views and interesting walking trails.

Explore the UNESCO Lavaux vineyard terraces or take an optional trip on the Chocolate Train to La Maison du Gruyère, see the production of this famous Swiss cheese before continuing to Cailler’s chocolate world . Alternatively, visit Charlie Chaplin’s World in Vevey dedicated to Chaplin's on-screen work - Montreux is a hub of music, culture and great food, making it the perfect first stop for a Swiss holiday.

Get active in the adventure capital of Europe - Interlaken

Interlaken is the gateway to the Jungfrau region, and sets you up for many options of adventure, walking and sightseeing as you’re surrounded by stunning blue lakes and the impressive snow-capped peaks of the Bernese Oberland. A ‘must do’ trip is to see Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO-World Heritage Site via railway from Kleine Scheidegg to the highest railway station in Europe - Jungfraujoch at 3,454-metres.

Perhaps take a full day trip to Trümmelbach Falls - Europe's largest subterranean waterfalls but watch out for the spray or hike from Grindelwald to Bussalp for spectacular views of the Jungfrau Mountain range. Visit Wengen for views over the Lauterbrunnen valley, and perhaps take the open-top cablecar up to Männlichen.

You can cruise on Lakes Thun and Brienz, enjoy the view over both the lakes from the Harder Kulm viewing platform (this is a great spot for sunset), visit the alpine garden at the Schynige Platte or explore the Brienzer Rothorn. For the adventurous, Interlaken ticks all the boxes, from canyon swings to paraglides, there's something here for everyone. You can also try your hand at chocolate making at the Funky Chocolate Club and take home a delicious souvenir.
