Almabtrieb

Almatrieb (1)

September is festival season throughout the alpine regions of Austria, as villages celebrate the annual "Almabtrieb". This wonderful traditional festival literally means "driving down the mountain" and celebrates the end of the summer when the cows are led down the mountain to the valley and their stables for the winter.

The sound of cowbells echo through the valley as hundreds of cows pass through the villages, highly decorated in tradtional costume. Alongside the "Cow Train" procession are village fetes and celebrations throughout the mountains - quite a spectacle to see and take part in.

The Almabtrieb event happens at the end of the summer.

In many villages, there is also live music and dancing, handicraft stalls and plenty of schnapps and local food to go round. The day starts around 10am with the parade lasting until lunchtime. After lunch the party starts and festivities continue into the evening. It is a wonderful day out for all ages.

The size of the celebration and the date varies between villages.
