Austria, The Salzkammergut
One of Austria’s most enchanting lake resorts, St. Wolfgang enjoys an especially picturesque setting on the shores of Lake Wolfgang. It is a place of great character, where pretty painted houses and shops line the narrow cobbled streets, and most evenings the village comes alive with open-air classical, operetta and brass band concerts. Lake activities are plentiful, including boat excursions to nearby St. Gilgen and trips on the original ‘Franz Josef’ paddle steamer. Many hotels have private lakeside lidos with free boat hire for relaxing days soaking up the views. The historic Schafberg cog railway provides a fantastic ride up to the top of the area’s the highest mountain (1,768m), from where you have a magnificent bird’s eye view of the lake and surrounding Salzkammergut region. St. Wolfgang is also an ideal base for excursions to nearby Salzburg, the UNESCO village of Hallstatt and Bavaria’s Berchtesgaden.
